PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS at WASHINGTON BULLETS FEB. 2, 1996 On to Landover --- The Portland Trail Blazers (21-23), after dropping a pair of four-point losses on their home court, are looking to get back on the winning track when they open a four-game road trip Friday at the USAir Arena in Landover against the Washington Bullets. The Blazers will be out to atone for a 112-100 setback at the hands of the Bullets in Portland in December and at the same time extend its win streak on the Atlantic Division club's floor to three straight. , The Blazers,who saw their fourth strongest final period comeback in history (from 23 points down) come up short in Wednesday's 94-88 loss to Utah, continue their trip up the Eastern Seaboard tomorrow night at Philadlephia. Blazers-Bullets series --- Portland dropped one game back in its all- time series with Washington, 34-33, after losing to the Bullets, 112-100, in the Rose Garden in December. Before that the Blazers had won five in a row in the series, and 10 of the previous 11, including a two-game sweep last year. Portland is 11-22 on the Bullets' home floor where it has won two in a row and six of its last seven. The Blazers won, 114-105, on their last visit to the USAir Arena, behind a 31-point, 11-assist performance by Rod Strickland. Washington's last win at home came on April 2, 1993. The Bullets' victory in Portland earlier this season narrowed the Blazers' homecourt advantage in the series to 22-12. The last time they met --- The Bullets shot 67 percent from the field in the second half, outscored the Blazers in each of the first three quarters and went on to a 112-100 victory in their first visit to the Rose Garden on Dec. 17. The loss was Portland's second in three days and snapped a five-game win streak over the Bullets. Clifford Robinson, coming off the bench for the first time this season, led Portland in scoring with 24 points, 22 of them in the second half. Arvydas Sabonis added 20 points to the Blazers cause and Rod Strickland had 18 points and 13 assists. But it wasn't enough as the Bullets answered with all five starters in double figures including a season-high 25 points by Calbert Cheaney. Washington's 7-foot-7 center Gheorghe Muresan had a career best 17 rebounds to go with 18 points. Portland shot .379 (36-95) from the floor. The Bullets hit at a .545 clip (48-88). A winning January --- Despite the Monday and Wednesday losses to Seattle and Utah respectively, Portland finished January with a winning record (9-6), the first time this season the team has been on the plus side at the end of the month. Its the Blazers' seventh consecutive January with a winning ledger. Portland started off the month by winning eight of its first nine games. Among the leaders --- CLIFFORD ROBINSON'S 23.9 points per game average places him seventh among NBA scoring leaders and his 40.4 minutes per game is No. 6 in the league . . . ROD STRICKLAND is averaging 9.3 assists a game, third best in the NBA, his 19.3 ppg scoring average ranks him 27th in the league, and his 38.7 minutes per game average is 15th highest . . . ARVYDAS SABONIS, who has converted of 17 of 29 in his last three games, is fifth among the league's best field goal shooters with a .563 mark (188-334) in 37 games . . . CHRIS DUDLEY is 16th in the NBA with a 9.9 average. Clifford from long-range --- Clifford Robinson swished five treys against Utah Wednesday enroute to a 33-point night. It was the seventh time this season he's cashed in on five or more three-pointers in a game and the 34th consecutive game he's connected on at least one. Since returning from a four-game absence with a sprained ankle, Clifford has converted 16 of 35 from long range in four games to keep pace with Orlando's Dennis Scott and Atlanta's Mookie Blaylock at the top of the NBA's three- point scoring race. Through Wednesday's games, Scott had made 128 three-pointers, Robinson 127 and Blaylock 125. Robinson, who set a team record by making all five of his triples in the second half of the Dec. 16 win over Denver, has been good on three or more three-pointers in 27 games thus far and he's made at least one in 39 of his 40 games to date. Robinson in AT&T Shootout --- CLIFFORD ROBINSON, who ranks second in the NBA in three-point field goals made with 126 and 12th in three-point accuracy at .443, has been selected to compete in the AT&T Shootout on Feb. 10, during the NBA All-Star Weekend in San Antonio. He is booked to go against defending champion Glen Rice of Charlotte. Others in the field include Dana Baros, Hubert Davis, Steve Kerr, Tim Legler, George McCloud, and Dennis Scott. Strickland nears 4,000 assist mark --- Point guard Rod Strickland needs just four more assists to reach the 4,000 level in his NBA career, now in its ninth season. Going into the Washington game, Rod has 3,996 career assists, including 394 this season. Strickland was off to the best start of his career before being sidelined with an eye injury for three games following the Jan. 16 Denver game. Now back in action, Rod is averaging 9.6 assists per contests, third best in the league, and is scoring at a 19.3 per game clip, second on the team to Clifford Robinson. Rod's best year for assists up to this season was 1993-94 when he averaged 9.0 apg in 82 games for the Blazers. His best scoring was done last year when he averaged 18.9 ppg in 64 outings. He's been the Blazers' leading assists man in all but one of his 41 games, has been in double figures in assists 21 times and has had 16 or more three times. Strickland has topped the Blazers in scoring 14 times, has tallied 20-plus games on 19 occasions, and twice has gone above the 30-point mark. Sabonis selected for Schick Rookie Game --- Arvydas Sabonis, the Blazers' 7-foot-3 center from Lithuania, has been selected to play in the Schick Rookie Game during NBA All-Star Weekend in San Antonio on Feb. 10. Sabonis, who ranks fifth among NBA rookies in scoring (13.7 ppg) and third in rebounding (7.1 rpg) while averaging 23.1 minutes, is among 16 first-year players who will participate in the contest which will be divided into two 15 minute halves. The Sabonis Story --- With 508 points in 37 games through Wednesday, Arvydas Sabonis, the 7-foot-3 center from Lithuania, is the highest scoring Blazers rookie since Clifford Robinson tallied 746 points in 82 games in 1989-90. Last season, Aaron McKie scored 293 points in 45 outings, and James Robinson had 276 in 58 games in 1993-94. Geoff Petrie is the all-time rookie leader, scoring 2,031 points in 82 games in 1970-71. . . . Add Sabonis: He has been named 1995 European Player of the Year by the Italian weekly Gazetto Dello Sport. Sabonis, considered to be one of the best European players ever, led Club Real Madrid of Spain to the 1995 European Men's Club Championships and helped Lithuania take a Silver Medal in the European Championships before joining the Blazers in September. The most recent honor was based on a poll of European managers, players, coaches and writers. The Rookie Combo --- ARVYDAS SABONIS, with 508 points, and forward GARY TRENT, 296 points, make up the Blazers' best rookie scoring twosome since 1989-90, and one of the four best in the last 18 years. Blazers ride herd over Mavs --- Clifford Robinson scored 22 of his game-high 29 points in the first half as the Trail Blazers stormed to a 68- 51 lead at intermission and rode off with a 112-103 win at Dallas Saturday. The Blazers took the lead early, scoring a season-best 38 points in the game's first 12 minutes. Robinson, in his second game back after sitting out four with a sprained right ankle, sank 8 of 11 field goal attempts and all three treys in the first half to spark the Blazers surge. Portland continued its blitz, opening the margin to as many as 23 points in the third quarter. Six Blazers scored in double figures and Rod Strickland (19 points, 13 assists) and Arvydas Sabonis (16 points, 13 rebounds) both produced double-doubles. Portland fired at a 52 percent clip from the field (44-85) while holding the Mavs to a 41 percent night (38-93). The Blazers had their second big rebounding night in a row, controlling the glass 57-41, after 56 boards Friday in San Antonio.) The victory snapped a two-game Mavericks' series win string. Sonics squeeze one out --- Gary Payton's 19-foot jumper with 13.5 seconds remaining sealed a 92-88 win for Seattle in the Rose Garden Monday. The Blazers were ahead, 70-66, going into the fourth quarter but couldn't hold the lead and the SuperSonics registered their second straight win in the series and their fourth in five games in Portland. Clifford Robinson led all scorers in the game with 25 points, James Robinson added 20 and Arvydas Sabonis chipped in with 19. Payton led Seattle with 21 points and Frank Brickowski came off the bench to score 16 for the visitors. Portland shot 43 percent (31-72) from the field while the Sonics were firing at a 51 percent clip (37-72). Seattle outrebounded Portland by one, 34-33. P.J. --- P.J. Carlesimo is in his second season as head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers. Last year, Carlesimo guided Portland to a 44-38 record, the first coach in 25 years to have moved directly from college to a head coaching job in the pros and post a winning record in his first season. The last coach to make the successful jump in one season was Cotton Fitzsimmons, who went from Kansas State to Phoenix to guide the Suns to a 48-34 in 1970-71. Roster moves --- Guard RANDOLPH CHILDRESS underwent surgery on his left shoulder Jan. 9 and is on the injured list. He suffered a torn anterior capsule and labrum of the left shoulder in Portland's Dec. 30 game at Cleveland. On Jan. 10, the Blazers signed free agents RUMEAL ROBINSON and ELMORE SPENCER. Robinson, a 6-2 guard up from the CBA, previously played four seasons in the NBA with Atlanta, New Jersey and Charlotte.
