PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS at MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES FEBRUARY 7, 1996 On Target --- The Portland Trail Blazers (23-24) wind up a four-game road in Minnesota's Target Center Wednesday with multiple goals in mind. First, they'll be looking to keep their record perfect in Minneapolis where they have won all 13 previous clashes with the Timberwolves. Second, the Blazers want a win to pull even at 24-24 before taking a five- day break for the NBA All-Star Weekend. Third, a victory at Minnesota would write a perfect ending to a four-game road trip through the frigid eastern part of the country. Portland has won two straight since opening the trek with a loss at Washington last Friday. A victory on Wednesday would extend the Blazers road streak to three straight, its longest of the season. Portland set up that opportunity with a dramatic come-from- behind 90-87 win at Toronto on Monday. Wednesday's probable starters --- (F) 3 CLIFFORD ROBINSON, 6-10, 23.5 ppg, 5.8 rpg; (F) 44 HARVEY GRANT, 6-9, 9.3 ppg, 5.1 rpg; (C) 24 CHRIS DUDLEY, 6-11, 5.2 ppg, 9.7 rpg; (G) 23 AARON MCKIE, 6-5, 11.1 ppg, 4.2 rpg; (G) 26 ROD STRICKLAND, 6-2, 19.5 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 9.5 apg. The Blazers and the Wolves --- Portland comes into Minneapolis with a perfect 13-0 record in the Timberwolves building, including a 108-102 success earlier this season. Over the seven seasons the two teams have been going at it, Portland has a 24-2 overall advantage and has won the last 12 in a row. Minnesota's only two wins in the series since it came into the league as an expansion franchise in 1989 have been in Portland. The last was on Feb. 2, 1993, when the Wolves left Memorial Coliseum with a 104-91 victory. The Blazers have won 11 of 13 on their own floor against Minnesota. The last two meetings --- Nov. 10: Portland kept its record perfect in Minnesota, beating the Timberwolves, 108-102, in the Target Center. The Blazers, led by Rod Strickland and Harvey Grant, turned in a strong third quarter to break the game open and get their firist road win of the season. Strickland finished with a team-high 24 points and nine assists and Grant added a season-high 18 points. Portland shot at a .443 clip from the field (35-79), and limited the Wolves to a .405 field goal night (36-76). Minnesota's Tom Gugliotta had a game-high 33 points and 17 rebounds. Chris Dudley led Portland with nine rebounds and a season- high six blocked shots. Jan. 7: Clifford Robinson's career-high 41 points and a solid team performance for four quarters pushed the Blazers to a 113-97 victory in the Rose Garden. Robinson's big effort was backed up by excellent support from the bench at both ends of the floor. James Robinson finished with 18 points, Gary Trent added 13 and Arvydas Sabonis 12. Portland outscored Minnesota, 62-26, in the paint, had a 22- 5 edge in second-chance points and 26-9 on the fast break. Both teams shot 50 percent but Portland limited the Wolves to an opponent season- low 64 attempts. Led by Chris Dudley's 11 rebounds, the Blazers had a 43-35 advantage on the glass. Rally rocks Raptors --- James Robinson hit the big one; Rod Strickland set it up, and Arvydas Sabonis provided the muscle as the Blazers rallied from nine points back in the fourth quarter to shoot down the Toronto Raptors, 90-87, in the SkyDome on Monday. James Robinson swished a long three-pointer inside the final second to break an 87-87 tie and clinch the win, Portland's second straight, equalling the team's longest road streak of the season. Before James' dramatic shot, Strickland set the fire that rallied the Blazers from a 75-66 deficit with 8:22 remaining. He scored 10 of his game-high 28 points in a 4:51 span late in the fourth quarter. Sabonis, who had seven of his game-high 11 rebounds in the fourth period, hit a layup with 39.3 seconds remaining to put Portland ahead 87-85. The Blazers trailed from the start of the second period on, until pulling even for the first time, 81-81, with 2:52 remaining. Clifford Robinson added 25 points to the Blazers cause. Both teams shot 48 percent from the field and Toronto had a 40-38 rebounding advantage.
