PORTLAND vs. GOLDEN STATE ---- FEBRUARY 13, 1996 Back home in the Garden --- The Portland Trail Blazers (24-24) return to action following the All-Star break Tuesday against Pacific Division rival Golden State, looking to break the .500 barrier and at the same time extend their win string to four in a row. It will be the first appearance in the Rose Garden for the Warriors and Rick Adelman since the former Blazers' head man took over the duties at Golden State. The matchup is important since the Blazers and Warriors are among four Western Conference teams currently in a scramble for playoff berths. Portland returned to .500 by finishing its four-game eastern road swing with three straight wins. That equals the longest current streak in the Western Conference and is the second longest in the NBA. Tuesday's probable starters --- (F) 3 CLIFFORD ROBINSON, 6-10, 23.7 ppg, 5.7 rpg; (F) 44 HARVEY GRANT, 6-9, 9.2 ppg, 5.1 rpg; (C) 24 CHRIS DUDLEY, 6-11, 5.1 ppg, 9.7 rpg; (G) 23 AARON MCKIE, 6-5, 11.1 ppg, 4.2 rpg; (G) 1 ROD STRICKLAND, 6-2, 19.3 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 9.7 apg. The Blazers vs. the Warriors --- Portland carries an 81-58 all-time series lead into Tuesday's clash with Golden State. The Blazers have won two in a row in the series an five of the last six. At home, Portland is 56-13 against the Warriors, has a four-game winning streak going and has won eight of the last 10 matchups. When the action is in the Bay Area, Golden State holds the edge, 45-25, but the Blazers have won two of the last three meetings there, including the 112-98 success back in November. The last time they met --- The Trail Blazers unleashed a record long- range barrage in Oakland Nov. 29 en route to a 112-98 win over Golden State. Portland blistered the nets from three-point land to the tune of a team record 13 makes in 23 attempts, including 10 of 16 in the first half. The first half blitz was also a record for makes and attempts. Portland shot 52 percent from the field for the game and led by as many as 20 points early in the fourth quarter before weathering a late Warrior flurry. Golden State finished with a 41 percent shot chart. Rod Strickland led the Blazers parade with 24 points including 9 of 12 field goals and 4 of 5 three-pointers. Arvydas Sabonis turned in his second straight 23-point game on a perfect shooting night, hitting all 8 of his field goals, 3 of them three pointers, and all 4 free throws. Clifford Robinson added 20 points, hitting 5 of 8 from long range. Buck Williams' 10 rebounds helped Portland to edge the Warriors 44-37 on the boards. Staying perfect in Minneapolis --- For the second road game in three days, Portland roared from behind in the fourth quarter to win over Minnesota, 103-93, in the Target Center on Wednesday. The victory, which raised the Blazers' all-time record on the Timberwolves floor to 14- 0, was their season-best third in a row on the road and wrote a healthy finish to a four-game eastern swing. After trailing by two, 88-86, with 5:01 remaining in the game, the Blazers went on a 13-0 run for a 98-88 advantage with just over a minute left. Clifford Robinson, who scored a career-high 41 points the last time the two teams met, had a game-high 32 points this time. Rod Strickland added 16 points and 16 assists, and Gary Trent contributed 16 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Isaiah Rider topped the Wolves with 26 points. Portland shot 48 percent from the field and Minnesota 49 percent. The Timberwolves were just 2 of 5 from the free throw line, both numbers being all-time Blazers opponent lows. Portland finished 19 of 32 at the stripe, and outrebounded Minnesota, 49-39. Among the leaders --- CLIFFORD ROBINSON'S 23.7 points per game average places him sixth among NBA scoring leaders and his 40.0 minutes per game is No. 8 in the league . . . ROD STRICKLAND is averaging 9.7 assists a game, second best in the NBA, his 19.4 ppg scoring average ranks him 25th in the league, he stands 19th in steals with a 1.51 average, and his 38.8 minutes per game average is 15th highest . . . ARVYDAS SABONIS is seventh among the NBA's top field goal shooters with a .550 mark (204-371) in 41 games . . . CHRIS DUDLEY is 18th in the NBA in rebounding with a 9.7 average and 19th in blocked shots (1.51 per game). Strickland having a banner year --- Rod Strickland played a big role in Wednesday's 10-point victory at Minnesota, contributing 16 points and 16 rebounds, his team-best 23rd double-double of the season. His 16 assists marked the fourth time this season he's dealt out that many or more in a game and the 23rd time he's been in double numbers. Rod, whose 9.7 per game average is second only to John Stockton among the NBA elite, has been Portland's assists leader in all but one of his 45 games. His season total of 435 assists has pushed him over the 4,000 mark (4,037) in his career. In addition, Strickland is scoring at a 19.3 per game clip, second on the team to Clifford Robinson, and leads the team in steals with a 1.51 per game average, 19th best in the league. Rod's best year for assists up to this season was 1993-94 when he averaged 9.0 apg in 82 games. His best scoring was done last year when he averaged 18.9 ppg in 64 outings. Strickland has topped the Blazers in scoring 17 times this year, has tallied 20-plus games on 21 occasions, and twice has gone above the 30-point mark. Clifford from long-range --- Clifford Robinson connected on two three- pointers as part of his game-high 32 point scoring night Wednesday at Minnesota, upping his season total from beyond the arc to 134. That kept him apace with Dennis Scott and Mookie Blaylock at the top of the NBA's three-point scoring race. Through Wednesday's games, Scott was the leader with 141 treys, Robinson was next and Blaylock was three back with 131. The all-time NBA record for three-pointers in a season is 217 set by New York's John Starks in 1993-94. The two makes by Robinson Wednesday extended his consecutive string of games with at least one triple to 35. It was the 43rd time in 44 games he's converted at least one. Robinson, who ranks 14th in the NBA in three-point percentage at .434, has made five or more seven time this season and three or more 27 times. The Sabonis Story --- With 546 points in 40 games through Monday, Arvydas Sabonis is the highest scoring Blazers rookie since Clifford Robinson tallied 746 points in 82 games in 1989-90. Last season, Aaron McKie scored 293 points in 45 outings, and James Robinson had 276 in 58 games in 1993-94. Add Sabonis: He has been named 1995 European Player of the Year by the Italian weekly Gazetto Dello Sport. The most recent honor was based on a poll of European managers, players, coaches and writers. The Rookie Combo --- ARVYDAS SABONIS, with 546 points, and forward GARY TRENT, 344 points, make up the Blazers' best rookie scoring twosome since 1989-90, and one of the four best in the last 18 years. How do they compare? After 48 games, Sabonis/Trent have 890 points. For a full season: Clifford Robinson, 746, and Drazen Petrovic, 583, (1,329 points) in 1989-90; Sam Bowie, 758, and Steve Colter, 556 (1,314 points) in 1984-85, and Mychal Thompson, 1,074, and Ron Brewer, 1,078 (2,152 points), in 1978-79. Trail Blazing --- Seventeen of the Blazers 24 wins have been by 6 points or more . . . Fourteen of Portland's 24 setbacks have been by 5 points or less . . .. . . The Blazers have an 12-14 mark overall against Western Conference teams 6-5 in conference games at home. Firing away --- The Blazers rank second in the NBA in three-point accuracy, converting at a .386 rate on 310 of 803. This compares with Portland's best season ever from long range, 1990-91, when the team compiled a .377 mark on 341 of 904 in 82 games . . . Portland's total home attendance so far this year exceeds the total count in any of the franchise's first six years before 1976-77 when the Blazers won the NBA championship. Thus far, Portland has had 10 sellouts of the 21,401- capacity Rose Garden. P.J. --- P.J. Carlesimo is in his second season as head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers. Last year, Carlesimo guided Portland to a 44-38 record, the first coach in 25 years to have moved directly from college to a head coaching job in the pros and post a winning record in his first season.
