The Blazers and Clippers --- The Blazers ride a six-game series win streak into their Saturday test with the Clippers in Anaheim. Portland, winner of nine of its last 10 matchups with the Los Angeles club, has a commanding 95-41 lead in the all-time series between the two teams. The 95 victories is the most by the Blazers against any club in the league. Portland found success on its last visit south a year ago and overall is 38- 30 on the road against the Clippers. Los Angeles' last win in the series was by a 114-110 score in the LA Sports Arena on March 20, 1994. The last time they met --- Rod Strickland, Arvydas Sabonis and Clifford Robinson pushed Portland's to one of its best offensive efforts of the season and the Blazers put on a defensive clamp in the second half for a 113-94 win over the Los Angeles Clippers Nov. 20 in the Rose Garden. Strickland, who sat out the fourth quarter, scored 27 points on 11-of-15 shooting in 31 minutes. Sabonis scored 20 points on a perfect 9-for-9 effort from the floor and dazzled the crowd with five spectacular assists. Robinson added 25 points to the cause. The Blazers, who shot 56 percent (46-82) from the field and got 76 of their points in the paint, broke the game open with a 19-0 run early in the third quarter. The Clippers, led by Terry Dehere's season-high 17 points, fired at a 51 percent clip for the night. Portland, led by Chris Dudley's 12 rebounds, had a 36-28 edge on the glass, and limited LA to just seven offensive boards. It was Portland's sixth straight double-digit win over the Clippers. Suns rein in Portland --- The Blazers led by four, 28-24 after one quarter but then scored just 56 points in the next three periods as Phoenix exited the Rose Garden with a 96-84 win on Thursday. It was the Blazers' fourth straight home loss and the seventh in the last eight matchups with the Suns. Turnovers (21 for 25 Phoenix points) again proved costly for Portland as did accuracy from three-point range (3 of 17) and the free throw line (.586 on 17 of 29). The Suns committed just 10 turnovers for nine points and shot 46 percent overall (36-78) from the field and 69 percent (24-35) free throws. Clifford Robinson and the Suns' Charles Barkley shared high-game honors with 24 points each. Robinson had 11 rebounds to lead the Blazers to a 47-39 edge on the boards. Strickland having a banner year --- Rod Strickland had an off-night Thursday against Phoenix (13 points and seven assists before fouling out) but the ninth year pro is still heading for his best season ever. He recorded his team-best 24th double-double Tuesday against Golden State (19 points and 11 assists plus 7 rebounds) following on the heels of a 16 point-16 assist game against Minnesota prior to the all star break. He's had 16 or more assists four times this season and has been in double numbers in 24 games. Rod, whose 9.6 per game average is third highest in the NBA, has been Portland's assists leader in all but one of his 47 games. His season total of 453 assists has pushed him over the 4,000 mark (4,055) in his career. In addition, Strickland is scoring at a 19.3 per game clip, second on the team to Clifford Robinson, and leads the team in steals with a 1.57 per game average, 18th best in the league. Rod's best year for assists up to this season was 1993-94 when he averaged 9.0 apg in 82 games. His best scoring was done last year when he averaged 18.9 ppg in 64 outings. Strickland has topped the Blazers in scoring 17 times this year, has tallied 20-plus games on 21 occasions, and twice has gone above the 30-point mark. Among the leaders --- CLIFFORD ROBINSON'S 23.7 points per game average places him seventh among NBA scoring leaders and his 39.8 minutes per game is No. 8 in the league . . . ROD STRICKLAND is averaging 9.6 assists a game, third best in the NBA, his 19.3 ppg scoring average ranks him 27th in the league, he stands 18th in steals with a 1.57 average, and his 38.7 minutes per game average is 15th highest . . . He's connected on 138 this season, second only to Orlando's Dennis Scott (144). Close behind are David McCloud of Dallas (137) and Mookie Blaylock of Atlanta (133). The all-time NBA record for three-pointers in a season is 217 set by New York's John Starks in 1993- 94. Robinson's three-pointer Thursday extended his consecutive string of games with at least one triple to 41. It was the 45th time in 46 games he's converted at least one. Robinson, who ranks 16th in the NBA in three- point percentage at .422, has made five or more seven time this season and three or more in 28 games. The Rookie Combo --- ARVYDAS SABONIS, with 561 points, and forward GARY TRENT, 363 points, are the two highest scoring Blazers rookies since 1989-90 when Clifford Robinson tallied 746 points and Drazen Petrovic 583. And, they make up one of Portland's four best rookie scoring tandems in the last 18 years. The others: Sam Bowie, 758, and Steve Colter, 556, in 1984-85, and Mychal Thompson, 1,074, and Ron Brewer, 1,078, in 1978-79. Going back-to-back --- The Clippers' contest Saturday opens the 13th of 19 back-to-back sets of games (contests on consecutive nights) on the Blazers' 1995-96 schedule. Portland will face the Atlanta Hawks in the Rose Garden on Sunday. So far, Portland has an even 12-12 split in its two-night combos, but is 5-7 in first games and is 3-7 when the opener is played on the road. Three of Portland's four matchups with the Clippers on this year's schedule are first games of back-to-back sets. Earlier this season, Portland downed the Clippers, 113-94, in Portland then slipped past the Lakers the next night in the Great Western Forum, 109-108. The Blazers have a 44.9-40.5 overall rebounding edge, lead their opponents on the defensive boards 30.7-28.9 and 14.2-11.6 at the offensive end. Chris Dudley is Portland's leading rebounder with a 9.5 average. Warriors steal one --- After fourth quarter come-from-behind wins in their previous two outings, the Blazers were victims themselves to a late opponent rally on Tuesday, losing at home to Golden State 99-98. It was Portland's third straight loss on its own floor, the most in a row at home this season. The Blazers had a five-point lead (98-93) with 1:21 left on the clock but Golden State capitalized on three Blazers turnovers in the final 46 seconds to score six points and steal the win. The victory on Feb. 7, which raised the Blazers' all-time record on the Timberwolves floor to 14-0, was their season-best third in a row on the road and wrote a healthy finish to a four-game eastern swing. After trailing by two, 88-86, with 5:01 remaining in the game, the Blazers went on a 13-0 run for a 98-88 advantage with just over a minute left. Attendance tops half million mark --- The Blazers drew 21,118 fans for Thursday's Phoenix game, raising their 24-game total in their new Rose Garden to 500,689---an average of 20,862 per game.
