Portland and Atlanta last season --- Neither team was able to hold serve on its own maple during 1994-95. The Blazers used a strong first half to win, 103-98, in the Omni on Jan. 3, breaking season-high six- game road losing streak. In the March 28 rematch in Portland, Atlanta had the last word in a series of scoring spurts by both teams, using a 10- 4 run early in the final stanza to secure a 102-91 win. Clifford Robinson was Portland's leader in the two games, putting together back-to-back 30-point efforts. Rod Strickland had 33 points and 24 assists in the two outings, including a 19 points and 15 assists in the game in Portland. The Blazers averaged 97.0 points and 44.0 rebounds and shot 44 percent from the field and 57 percent from the line in the two games. The Hawks averaged 100.0 points and 41.5 rebounds and shot 47 percent from the floor and 67 percent from the line. Blazers clipped in Pond --- For the second time in three games, the Blazers let a fourth quarter lead get away and fell to the Los Angeles Clippers, 100-96, last night in Anaheim's Arrowhead Pond. Portland led, 73-71, when the final stanza began but fell behind by as many as eight. Rod Strickland and Arvydas Sabonis sparked a rally to pull their team within one, 95-94, with 1:11 remaining. After Stanley Roberts short jumper put the Clips up by three, 97-94, Clifford Robinson sank two free throws to cut the margin to one again, 97-96, before L.A. went iced the win, their first in 10 games, by hitting three of four at the line. It was Portland's third straight loss and the first to the Clippers in the last seven meetings. Strickland led the Blazers in scoring with 25 points and Sabonis added 22. Robinson was limited to just 5 points, his lowest total in four seasons. Both teams finished shooting 47 percent for the game. Strickland having a banner year --- Rod Strickland, who scored a game-high 25 points last night against the Clippers, is having his best season ever. Saturday was the 22nd time the nine year pro has turned in a 20-point plus effort and the 18th time he's been the Blazers' scoring leader. He recorded his team-best 24th double-double Tuesday against Golden State (19 points and 11 assists plus 7 rebounds). That came on the heels of a 16 point-16 assist game against Minnesota before the all star break. He's had 16 or more assists four times this season and has been in double numbers in 24 games. Rod, whose 9.6 per game average is third highest in the NBA, has been Portland's assists leader in all but one of his 48 games. His season total of 459 assists has pushed him over the 4,000 mark (4,061) in his career. In addition, Strickland is scoring at a 19.4 per game clip, second on the team to Clifford Robinson, and leads the team in steals with a 1.58 per game average, 18th best in the league. Rod's best year for assists up to this season was 1993-94 when he averaged 9.0 apg in 82 games. His best scoring was done last year when he averaged 18.9 ppg in 64 outings. Attendance tops half million mark --- The Blazers drew 21,118 fans for Thursday's Phoenix game, raising their 24-game total in their new Rose Garden to 500,689---an average of 20,862 per game. That's the fourth highest in the league behind Charlotte, Chicago and Toronto. Total home attendance so far this year exceeds the total count in any of the franchise's first seven years, including 1976-77 when the Blazers won the NBA championship. Thus far, Portland has had 10 sellouts of the 21,401- capacity Rose Garden. Clifford from long-range --- Clifford Robinson missed all three of his three point attempts against the Clippers last night, ending a streak of 41 consecutive games in which he has connected on at least one from beyond the arc. It was only the second time in 47 games this season he's drawn a blank. He still ranks among the top four NBA long-range shooters. Dennis Scott of Orlando is the league-leader with 147, David McCloud of Dallas has 140 and Robinson and Mookie Blaylock of Atlanta each have 138. The all-time NBA record for three-pointers in a season is 217 set by New York's John Starks in 1993-94. Robinson, who ranks 17th in the NBA in three-point percentage at .418, has made five or more seven time this season and three or more in 28 games. The Rookie Combo --- ARVYDAS SABONIS, with 583 points, and forward GARY TRENT, 375 points, are the two highest scoring Blazers rookies since 1989-90 when Clifford Robinson tallied 746 points and Drazen Petrovic 583. And, they make up one of Portland's four best rookie duos in the last 18 years. The others: Sam Bowie, 758, and Steve Colter, 556, in 1984-85, and Mychal Thompson, 1,074, and Ron Brewer, 1,078, in 1978-79. Warriors steal one --- After fourth quarter come-from-behind wins in their previous two outings, the Blazers were victims themselves to a late opponent rally on Tuesday, losing at home to Golden State 99-98. It was Portland's third straight loss on its own floor, the most in a row at home this season. The Blazers had a five-point lead (98-93) with 1:21 left on the clock but Golden State capitalized on three Blazers turnovers in the final 46 seconds to score six points and steal the win. For the game, Portland turned the ball over 26 times for 27 Warrior points. That was the most Blazers miscues since their loss to Vancouver in the season's opener. Seven of the turnovers came in the game's last 3:53. Clifford Robinson topped Portland scoring with 23 points and Rod Strickland had his 24th double-double with 19 points and 11 assists. The Warriors' Chris Mullin led all scorers in the game with 25 points. Portland finished with a 47 percent field goal chart and Golden State 48 percent. Carlesimo is in his second season as head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers. Last year, Carlesimo guided Portland to a 44-38 record, the first coach in 25 years to have moved directly from college to a head coaching job in the pros and post a winning record in his first season. The last coach to make the successful jump in one season was Cotton Fitzsimmons, who went from Kansas State to Phoenix to guide the Suns to a 48-34 in 1970-71.
