The Blazers are fresh from a 107-78 win over the Denver Nuggets on Thursday, a victory that snapped a five game losing streak and a string of six consecutive losses at home. Portland will shooting for a split in the season series with the Pistons after losing in overtime at Detroit earlier this season. The Detroit matchup ends a four-game Blazers homestand. On Tuesday, Portland opens a four-game eastern road swing at Indiana. Its the Blazers' final long road trip of the season. Sunday's probable starters --- (F) 3 CLIFFORD ROBINSON, 6-10, 22.7 ppg, 5.7 rpg; (F) 44 HARVEY GRANT, 6-9, 9.0 ppg, 5.1 rpg; (C) 24 CHRIS DUDLEY, 6-11, 5.1 ppg, 9.3 rpg; (G) 23 AARON MCKIE, 6-5, 11.1 ppg, 4.2 rpg; (G) 1 ROD STRICKLAND, 6-2, 19.3 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 9.5 apg. The all-time series --- The Pistons' 107-100 overtime win in Detroit early this season snapped a four-game Portland series win streak and tied the all-time competition between the two teams at 37 wins each over 26 seasons. The Blazers, who will be hosting the Pistons for the first time in their new building, are 25-11 at home against the Pistons. They won the last three clashes in Memorial Coliseum and have downed Detroit on 24 of its last 25 stops in Portland. Detroit's only victory here since 1974 came on Dec. 13, 1991, when the Pistons broke a 21-game Blazers home floor domination. Portland, 12-26 on the road against the Pistons, had taken three in a row in the Palace at Auburn Hills before Detroit's OT victory this season. The last time they met --- The Blazers battled back from a six-point deficit at the start of the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime before losing at Auburn Hills, 107-100, on Nov. 8. Detroit, led by guard Joe Dumars, outscored Portland, 16-9, in the extra seasson to claim the victory, its first over the Blazers in the last five games. The Piston win came despite a big game from Clifford Robinson, who put 30 points on the scoreboard---his second 30-plus outburst in four games. Rod Strickland added 25 points and dished out 10 assists. Dumars led all scorers in the game with 41 points, including 16 of 18 from the free throw line. Portland posted a .474 field goal chart (36-76), while the host Pistons were shooting .439 (36-82) from the floor. For the second game in a row Portland was outrebounded, this time, 45-33, and was outdueled on the offensive glass, 20-9. Crushing the Nuggets --- The Trail Blazers broke out of a five-game slump with a vengence Thursday as they posted their biggest winning margin of the season---29 points---in a 107-78 victory over Denver. The victory snapped a five-game losing streak and allowed Portland to avoid going down to a franchise record seventh straight loss at home. The Blazers raced to a 28-12 lead after one quarter and were up by 33 early in the final period. Aaron McKie led six Portland players in double figure scoring with 21 points and Rumeal Robinson, getting his first Blazers start, contributed 18 points and 13 assists, both season highs. Portland fired at a .481 clip from the floor (37-77) while slowing Denver to a .375 field goal pace (30-80). The Blazers had their best night at the free throw line in three seasons, finishing 26 of 28 (93 percent) after making their first 21 in a row. Portland pounded out a huge 53-25 rebounding advantage including a 41-19 margin at the defensive end. The win, the Blazers' third in a row this season, gave Portland its fifth series win in the last six years over Denver. Attendance record set --- Portland set a new one-season attendance record Tuesday with 20,640 fans on hand for San Antonio, upping its total in the new Rose Garden to 541,579. That was better than the previous 41-game regular season mark of 528,408 reached three times from 1991 to 1994 during a stretch when the Memorial Coliseum was sold out for an NBA record 810 consecutive games. After Thursday's Denver game, Portland's 27-game home total now reads 561,463 (an average of 20,795) the league's fourth highest behind Charlotte, Chicago and Toronto. Among the leaders --- CLIFFORD ROBINSON'S 22.7 points per game average places him 11th among NBA scoring leaders and his 39.0 minutes per game is No. 12 in the league . . . ROD STRICKLAND is averaging 9.5 assists a game, third best in the NBA, his 19.3 ppg scoring average ranks him 26th in the league, he stands 21st in steals with a 1.54 average, and his 38.4 minutes per game average is 18th highest . . . ARVYDAS SABONIS is seventh among the NBA's top field goal shooters with a .553 mark (230-416) in 46 games . . . CHRIS DUDLEY is 21st in the NBA in rebounding with a 9.3 average and 21st in blocked shots (1.43 per game). Strickland having a banner year --- Rod Strickland is having his best season ever. On Feb. 17 against the Clippers, his game-high 25 points was his 22nd 20-point plus effort of the season and the 18th time he's been the Blazers' scoring leader. He recorded his team-best 24th double- double last Tuesday against Golden State (19 points and 11 assists plus 7 rebounds). He's had 16 or more assists four times this season and has been in double numbers in 24 games. Rod, whose 9.5 per game average is third highest in the NBA, has been Portland's assists leader in all but two of his 50 games. His season total of 474 assists has pushed him over the 4,000 mark (4,076) in his career. In addition, Strickland is scoring at a 19.3 per game clip, second to Clifford Robinson, and leads the team in steals with a 1.54 per game average, 21st highest in the league. Rod's best year for assists up to this season was 1993-94 when he averaged 9.0 apg in 82 games. His best scoring was done last year when he averaged 18.9 ppg in 64 outings. Clifford from long-range --- Clifford Robinson missed both of his attempts from long range Thursday against Denver, but his 50-game total of 142 is equal to his one season-high set last season. He needs just two more treys to pass Terry Porter as Portland's all-time single season three-point leader. He ranks among the top four NBA long-range shooters behind Dennis Scott of Orlando (161), Mookie Blaylock of Atlanta (149), and David McCloud of Dallas (146). The all-time NBA record for three-pointers in a season is 217 set by New York's John Starks in 1993-94. Robinson, who ranks 20th in the NBA in three-point percentage at .416, has made five or more seven times this season and three or more 28 times and has converted on at least one in 47 of 50 games. The Rookie Combo --- ARVYDAS SABONIS, with 619 points, and forward GARY TRENT, 417 points, make up the highest scoring Blazers rookie combination since 1989-90 when Clifford Robinson tallied 746 points and Drazen Petrovic 583, and are one of the four best rookie duos in the last 18 years. The others: Sam Bowie, 758, and Steve Colter, 556, in 1984- 85, and Mychal Thompson, 1,074, and Ron Brewer, 1,078, in 1978-79. Add Sabonis-Trent: Arvydas Sabonis, with the NBA's seventh best field goal percentage, .553, and Trent, with a .521 mark, are Portland's two top marksmen from the floor, and are one-two in field goal accuracy among the league's rookies. Trent, who had his fourth career double- double Tuesday against San Antonio (team-high 19 points and game- high 10 rebounds), has averaged 12.0 points in his last nine outings while burning the net at a .658 clip (48 of 75). Trail Blazing --- Eighteen of the Blazers 29 setbacks have been by five points or less and nine by three or under . . . Conversely, 18 of the Blazers 25 wins have been by 6 points or more . . . The Blazers are 5-9 in games decided by three points or less, but 4-2 when the final margin is two points or under . . . Portland is 21-8 when leading going into the fourth quarter and 4-21 when tied or behind . . . It is 18-11 when holding the lead at halftime and 6-17 when trailing . . . The Blazers are 15-13 when leading after one quarter and 9-15 when behind . . . They are 17-9 when scoring more than 100 points and 16-9 when limiting opponents to under 100 points . . . Portland is 9-15 against teams with better than .500 records and 16-13 with teams at .500 or under . . . Portland is 11-4 when shooting 50 percent or better from the field and 14-6 when keeping opponents at 43 percent or under . . . For the season, the Blazers are averaging 100.1 ppg to their opponents' 99.4 . . . The Blazers average margin of victory is 10.1 ppg, and their average loss margin is 7.2 ppg. On the boards --- Portland, one of the league's premier rebounding teams last season, is among the leaders again this year. After outrebounding the Spurs on Tuesday, 53-41, and the Nuggets by a whopping 54-25 margin on Thursday, the Blazers rank No. 1 in the league in defensive rebounding percentage, third in total rebounding percentage and sixth in offensive percentage. So far this season, Portland has outrebounded its foes by an average of 4.7 boards a game (45.0-40.3), outbattled them on the defensive glass 31.0-28.9 and at the offensive end, 14.0-11.4. Spurs by three --- Portland came up three points short for the second time in three nights as San Antonio cashed in for a 108-105 victory Tuesday in the Rose Garden. It was the Blazers fifth straight loss since the All Star break and the sixth in a row at home, equalling the longest in the club's history. It was a game of surges. After the Spurs bolted to a 32- 15 lead in the first 12 minutes, The Blazers bounced back to outscore San Antonio, 36-9 in the first 9:28 of the second stanza, and went to the locker room at halftime up 57-52. A 38-point third quarter helped the Spurs go back in front, 93-83, with 11 minutes remaining. But Portland made one more run, pulling to within one twice in the last 2 minutes before the Spurs iced the win with free throws. Gary Trent led the Blazers with his fourth career double-double, 19 points and 10 rebounds, Rumeal Robinson had a big game with a season-high 16 points and 7 assists. Portland shot 43 percent from the field and the Spurs 51 percent. David Robinson topped San Antonio with 39 points. Portland outrebounded the Spurs, 53-41. Hawks claw one out --- For the third time in four games, Portland let a fourth quarter lead get away as Atlanta won, 93-90, Sunday on its first visit to the Rose Garden. The Blazers were ahead by eight, 73-65, at the start of the final period and had the lead, 90-87 with two minutes remaining but came up empty the rest of the way. It was their fourth loss in a row and their fifth straight at home, equalling their longest homecourt losing streak in 23 years. Clifford Robinson topped all scorers in the game with 25 points, including 13 in the third stanza. Portland finished shooting 46 percent (36-78) from the field while limiting the Hawks to a 42 percent chart (32-77). Harvey Grant led Blazers' rebounders with 8 but Atlanta had a 47-39 edge on the glass. The February record --- The Trail Blazers need to win all three of their remaining games in February (Sunday vs. Detroit, Tuesday at Indiana and Wednesday at Atlanta) to avoid posting their first losing record for the month since 1993 and only their third in the last 10 years. Currently 4- 6 for February, a loss in any of the next three games would also be Portland's third month with a negative record out the last four. P.J. --- P.J. Carlesimo is in his second season as head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers. Last year, Carlesimo guided Portland to a 44-38 record, the first coach in 25 years to have moved directly from college to a head coaching job in the pros and post a winning record in his first season. The last coach to make the successful jump in one season was Cotton Fitzsimmons, who went from Kansas State to Phoenix to guide the Suns to a 48-34 in 1970-71. Out on the road --- After Sunday's clash with Detroit, the Blazers head east for their final long road trip of the season. They have games scheduled at Indiana Tuesday (6:30 p.m., KEX Radio, KGW-TV), Wednesday in Atlanta (4:30 p.m., KEX Radio), Friday at Miami (4:30 p.m., KEX Radio, KGW-TV) and Saturday at Orlando (4:30 p.m., KEX Radio, KGW-TV).
