PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS at ATLANTA HAWKS FEBRUARY 28, 1996 On to Atlanta --- The Portland Trail Blazers (25-31) head for the Omni tonight to take on Atlanta, looking to snap a two game losing streak as well as atone for a three-point (93-90) homecourt loss to the Hawks 10 days ago. The Blazers, on the second stop of a four-games-in-five-nights eastern road trip, went down, 101-87, at Indiana last night. Portland, 10- 18 on the road this season, has dropped seven of eight since the All Star break. The 25-31 record is the farthest below the break-even mark the club has been at this point in the season since the 1985-86 team had the same 25-31 record in late Februray. That year, Portland finished the season by winning 17 of its last 26 and went to the Western Conference playoff semi-finals before losing to the Los Angeles Lakers. Each game from here on out is crucial for the Blazers who are locked in a battle to extend their string of consecutive post-season appearances to 14 years in a row. Since winning the NBA title in 1977, the Blazers have been in the playoffs 17 times in 18 years. Wednesday's probable starters --- (F) 3 CLIFFORD ROBINSON, 6-10, 22.4 ppg, 5.6 rpg; (F) 44 HARVEY GRANT, 6-9, 9.0 ppg, 5.0 rpg; (C) 24 CHRIS DUDLEY, 6-11, 5.1 ppg, 9.2 rpg; (G) 23 AARON MCKIE, 6-5, 11.4 ppg, 4.2 rpg; (G) 21 RUMEAL ROBINSON, 6-1, 6.0 ppg, 3.8 apg. The all-time series --- Portland won on its last visit to the Omni, 103-98, a year ago to break a six-game homecourt win streak by Atlanta. But the Hawks, who lead the all-time series between the two teams, 37-32, have a 25-9 cushion in matchups with the Blazers in the Omni. Portland's 93- 90 loss to Atlanta 10 days ago in the Rose Garden was the second straight to the Hawks at home, reversing a string of six victories in a row at home by the Blazers in the series. Portland is 23-12 at home against Atlanta over 26 seasons. A loss to Atlanta Wednesday would give the Hawks their first season sweep of the Blazers since 1985-86 and only the fourth in the past 23 years. The last time they met --- For the third time in four games, Portland let a fourth quarter lead get away as Atlanta won, 93-90, on its first visit to the Rose Garden. The Blazers were ahead by eight, 73-65, at the start of the final period and had the lead, 90-87 with two minutes remaining but came up empty the rest of the way. It was their fourth loss in a row and their fifth straight at home, equalling their longest homecourt losing streak in 23 years. Clifford Robinson topped all scorers in the game with 25 points, including 13 in the third stanza. Grant Long and Steve Smith paced Atlanta with 18 points each. Andrew Lang grabbed 13 rebounds and Long 12 to lead the Hawks to a 47-39 advantage on the boards. Harvey Grant's 8 rebounds topped the Blazers effort. Portland finished shooting 46 percent (36-78) from the field while limiting the Hawks to a 42 percent chart (32-77). Harvey Grant led Blazers' rebounders with eight but Atlanta had a 47-39 edge on the glass. Pacers prevail --- The Trail Blazers dug themselves a huge hole in the first quarter and spent the rest of the game trying to climb out as they opened a four-games-in-five-nights road trip with a 101-87 loss last night at Indiana. It was Portland's seventh setback in eight games since the All Star break and dropped the Blazers six games below .500. Indiana jumped to a 36-16 lead after one quarter as the Blazers shot just 27 percent (6-22) in the first 12 minutes. Portland finished with a .400 field goal mark (32-80) while the host Pacers were filling the nets at a .554 rate (41-74). Aaron McKie led Portland scoring with 22 points while Rik Smits had a game-high 27 to lead the Pacers. Chris Dudley led all rebounders in the game with 9, but Indiana controlled the boards, 47-35. It was Portland's third straight loss in Indianapolis after winning on the three previous stops there. Attendance record set --- Portland broke its all-time one-season attendance record last Tuesday when 20,640 fans turned out for the San Antonio game, upping its total in the new Rose Garden to 541,579. That was more than the previous 41-game regular season mark of 528,408 reached three times from 1991 to 1994 during a stretch when the Memorial Coliseum was sold out for an NBA record 810 consecutive games. After Sunday's Detroit game, Portland's 28-game home total now reads 582,143 (an average of 20,791) the league's fourth highest behind Charlotte, Chicago and Toronto. Going back-to-back --- Wednesday's game closes out the 14th of 19 back-to-back sets of games (contests played on consecutive nights) on the Blazers' 1995-96 schedule. Portland is 12-15 in two night combos after last night's loss at Indiana. Overall, the Blazers are 7-6 in second games of the back-to-back sets and have a 4-4 record when the closing game occurs on the road. Among the leaders --- CLIFFORD ROBINSON'S 22.4 points per game average places him 12th among NBA scoring leaders and his 38.8 minutes per game is No. 12 in the league . . . ROD STRICKLAND is averaging 9.5 assists a game, third best in the NBA, his 19.3 ppg scoring average ranks him 27th in the league, he stands 20th in steals with a 1.54 average, and his 38.4 minutes per game average is 18th highest . . . ARVYDAS SABONIS is fifth among the NBA's top field goal shooters with a .549 mark (239-435) in 49 games . . . CHRIS DUDLEY is 21st in the NBA in rebounding with a 9.2 average and 21st in blocked shots (1.40 per game). The Rookie Combo --- ARVYDAS SABONIS, with 642 points, and forward GARY TRENT, 422 points, make up the highest scoring Blazers rookie combination since Clifford Robinson tallied 746 points and Drazen Petrovic 583 during 1988-89, and are one of the four best rookie duos in the last 18 years. The others: Sam Bowie, 758, and Steve Colter, 556, in 1984-85, and Mychal Thompson, 1,074, and Ron Brewer, 1,078, in 1978- 79. Add Sabonis-Trent: Arvydas Sabonis, with the NBA's eighth best field goal percentage, .549, and Trent, with a .520 mark, are Portland's two top marksmen from the floor, and are one-two in field goal accuracy among the league's rookies. Trent, who had his fourth career double- double last Tuesday against San Antonio (team-high 19 points and game-high 10 rebounds), has averaged 10.8 points in his last nine outings while burning the net at a .641 clip (50 of 78). Blazer clips --- CLIFFORD ROBINSON'S two three-pointers Sunday against Detroit increased his season total to 144 to make him the new Blazer one-season leader in that category, replacing Terry Porter who swished 143 in 81 games during the 1992-93 season. Among the top four three- point shooters in the league, Robinson now has 145 treys after 52 games . . .RUMEAL ROBINSON, signed by the Blazers from the CBA in January, recorded his second consecutive double-double Sunday against Detroit (19 points, 11 assists), while drawing his second straight start at the point in place of Rod Strickland. Rumeal, who had averaged 3.2 points, 1.9 assists and 9.6 minutes in his first 13 appearances with the Blazers, has scored at a 15.0 clip, and averaged 9.8 assists and 34.2 minutes in his last four outings . . . AARON MCKIE, a 26 percent marksman from long range (14 of 53) in his first 53 games, swished all six of his triples in games versus Denver and Detroit last week . . . When BUCK WILLIAMS missed the second of two free throws in the first quarter of the Detroit game, he ended a string of 14 in a row from the line going back six games. At the time, it was Portland's longest streak going. Trail Blazing --- Eighteen of the Blazers 31 setbacks have been by five points or less and nine by three or under . . . Conversely, 18 of the Blazers 25 wins have been by 6 points or more . . . The Blazers are 5-9 in games decided by three points or less, but 4-2 when the final margin is two points or under . . . Portland is 21-8 when leading going into the fourth quarter and 4-23 when tied or behind . . . It is 18-11 when holding the lead at halftime and 6-19 when trailing . . . The Blazers are 15-14 when leading after one quarter and 9-16 when behind . . . They are 17-9 when scoring more than 100 points and 16-10 when limiting opponents to under 100 points . . . Portland is 9-18 against teams with better than .500 records and 16-13 with teams at .500 or under . . . Portland is 11-4 when shooting 50 percent or better from the field and 14-6 when keeping opponents at 43 percent or under . . . For the season, the Blazers are averaging 99.6 ppg to their opponents' 99.3 . . . Portland is 4-10 against teams in the Central Division and 1-6 against them when playing on the road . . . In Eastern Conference matchups, the Blazers have a 12-13 mark and are 4-8 in games played east of the Mississippi. The February record --- The Trail Blazers loss to Detroit Sunday assured them of posting their first losing record for February since 1993 and only their third negative count for the month in the last 10 years. Currently 4-8 for February with one game remaining, Portland is destined to have its worst mark for the month since 1985-86 when the club struggled through a 1-12 run. Pistons pump down the stretch --- Portland owned a one point lead, 81-80, with 3 minutes remaining but then came up empty on its next seven possessions as the Detroit Pistons scored the last 13 points in the game, 11 of them at the line, for a 93-81 win Sunday in the Rose Garden. It was the Blazers seventh loss in the last eight games at on their own floor and was only the second in the last 26 matchups with the Pistons in Portland. Rumeal Robinson, getting his second consecutive start in place of Rod Strickland, led the Blazers in scoring with a season-high 19 points and also contributed a game-high 11 assists for his second consecutive double-double. Grant Hill and Alan Houston each scored 23 points to pace the Pistons. The Blazers connected on 32 of 77 from the floor (.416) and Detroit 30-67 (.448). Portland connected on a season-low 7 free throws (in 12 attempts) while the Pistons were hitting 26 of 31 from the line. Detroit had a 40-30 rebounding edge. Crushing the Nuggets --- The Trail Blazers broke out of a five-game slump with a vengaence Thursday as they posted their biggest winning margin of the season---29 points---in a 107-78 victory over Denver. The victory snapped a five-game losing streak and allowed Portland to avoid going down to a franchise record seventh straight loss at home. The Blazers raced to a 28-12 lead after one quarter and were up by 33 early in the final period. Aaron McKie led six Portland players in double figure scoring with 21 points and Rumeal Robinson, making his first start as a Blazer, contributed 18 points and 13 assists, both season highs. Portland fired at a .481 clip from the floor (37-77) while slowing Denver to a .375 field goal pace (30-80). The Blazers had their best night at the free throw line in three seasons, finishing 26 of 28 (93 percent) after making their first 21 in a row. Portland pounded out a huge 53-25 rebounding advantage including a 41-19 margin at the defensive end. The win, the Blazers' third in a row this season, gave Portland its fifth series win in the last six years over Denver. P.J. --- P.J. Carlesimo is in his second season as head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers. Last year, Carlesimo guided Portland to a 44-38 record, the first coach in 25 years to have moved directly from college to a head coaching job in the pros and post a winning record in his first season. The last coach to make the successful jump in one season was Cotton Fitzsimmons, who went from Kansas State to Phoenix to guide the Suns to a 48-34 in 1970-71. On the road --- After Wednesday's date in the Omni, the Blazers take a one-day break then continue their final long road trip of the season, a four-games-in-five-nights odyssey, in Miami on Friday (4:30 p.m., KEX Radio, KGW-TV), then finish it off Saturday in Orlando (4:30 p.m., KEX Radio, KGW-TV).
