The Blazers posted their second close win in a row Tuesday when they downed the Lakers in Los Angeles, 105-99, to extend their victory string to three, one shy of their longest of the season and currently the second longest in the Western Conference. Portland, 1-1 versus the Clippers this season, not only will be out to atone for a four-point loss at the hands of the Los Angeles team in Anaheim in February, but more importantly to solidify their hold on seventh place in the race for the Western Conference playoffs. The Blazers are battling to make their 18th playoff appearance in the last 19 seasons and an NBA-best 14th in a row. Friday's probable starters --- (F) 3 CLIFFORD ROBINSON, 6-10, 21.7 ppg, 5.8 rpg; (F) 33 GARY TRENT, 6-8, 8.2 ppg, 3.8 rpg; (C) 11 ARVYDAS SABONIS, 7-3, 13.7 ppg, 7.2 rpg; (G) 44 HARVEY GRANT, 6-9, 9.3 ppg, 4.8 rpg; (G) 1 ROD STRICKLAND, 6-3, 19.5 ppg, 9.6 apg. Even so, Portland holds a 95-42 lead in its 26-year matchup with the Clippers, with the 95 victories being the most by the Blazers over any NBA foe. The Trail Blazers' 113- 95 win in November was the seventh straight and the 57th in 69 home games against the Los Angeles club. The Clippers are 3-37 in contests in Portland over the past 15 seasons. The 100-96 loss to the Clippers in Anaheim on Feb. 17 narrowed the Blazers lead in games won on the road against the L.A. franchise to 38-31. The Blazers and Clippers this season --- Rod Strickland, Arvydas Sabonis and Clifford Robinson all turned in big games for Portland on Nov. 20 as the Blazers stormed to a 113-94 victory. Along the way, Portland shot 56 percent from the field (46-82), scored 76 of their points in the paint, and outrebounded the Clips, 36-28. Strickland scored 27 points on 11-of-15 shooting, Sabonis added 20 points on a perfect 9-for-9 night from the field, and Clifford Robinson added 25 counters. In the rematch in the Arrowhead Pond in Anaheim, the Blazers let a 73-71 lead at the beginning of the fourth quarter get away as the Clippers eeked out a 100-96 victory, breaking a 10-game losing streak. It was their first in the last seven tries against the Blazers. Strickland topped all scorers in the game with 25 points and Sabonis, 9 of 11 from the field, added 22. Clifford Robinson was held to a season-low 5 points in 29 minutes. Both teams shot 47 percent from the field while the Clippers edged Portland on the glass, 39-38. Strickland and Sabonis were Portland's two scoring leaders with 26.0 and 21.0 averages respectively. Blazers stop Lakers in LA --- Portland, behind the strong play of Arvydas Sabonis and Rod Strickland, defeated the Lakers in Los Angeles for the third game in a row on Tuesday, this time by a 105-99 score in a key contest in the scramble for positions in the Western Conference playoffs. Sabonis, getting the third start of his NBA career, tallied a team-high 25 points including six in the final 3:39 when the Blazers outscored the Lakers, 15-4 for the come-from-behind victory. Rod Strickland, who finished with his third straight double-double---23 points and 12 assists--- had four points in that run as did Clifford Robinson. Buck Williams' layin with 24 seconds left gave Portland a 104-99 cushion. The loss was only fourth in the last 18 games for the Lakers who boast the conference's fifth best homecourt record. Edlen Campbell scored 26 points and Cedric Ceballos 23 to lead the Los Angeles club. Portland shot 50 percent for the game and had 10 more field goals than the Lakers who finished hitting 42 percent from the floor. The Blazers had a 42-41 rebounding advantage. The stretch run --- Six weeks remain in the season but the stretch run is already hot in the Western Conference where five teams are battling for the last three spots in the 1996 playoffs. Currently, just four games separate the sixth through tenth place teams in the conference--- Phoenix, Portland, Sacramento, Golden State and Denver. After defeating Indiana Sunday and the Lakers Tuesday, the Blazers moved into seventh in the conference playoff race, 2 1/2 games back of sixth place Phoenix and a half game ahead of Sacramento. Golden State is just one game back of Portland in ninth. Among the leaders --- CLIFFORD ROBINSON'S 21.7 points per game average places him 13th among NBA scoring leaders and his 38.5 minutes per game is No. 14 in the league . . . With 19 games remaining, Williams, needs 66 points to join the select group that includes Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Wilt Chamberlain, Moses Malone, Elvin Hayes, Robert Parish, Walt Bellamy and Bob Pettit. Of those, only Parish is still an active player and all but Parish and Malone have already been inducted into Basketball's Hall of Fame. Going into Friday's contest with the Clippers, Williams has 15,934 points and 12,327 rebounds. Williams is closing in on Pete Maravich (15,948) and Kiki Vandeweghe (15,980) on the NBA's all-time scoring list. Vandweghe currently ranks 56th and Maravich 57th among the league's all-time point producers. Rod perking --- Since returning to the lineup three games ago, Rod Strickland has been on a role. In the three games---all Blazers victories--- he's posted three consecutive double-doubles while averaging 23.3 points and 11.8 assists a game and shooting 51 percent from the field (28-55). His 9.6 per game assists average in 53 games, third best in the league, currently is the second highest average in the club's history to Terry Porter's 10.1 per game average in 82 games in 1987-88. The Rookie Combo --- ARVYDAS SABONIS, with 755 points, and forward GARY TRENT, 498 points, make up the highest scoring Blazers rookie combination since Clifford Robinson tallied 746 points and Drazen Petrovic 583 during 1988-89, and are one of the four best Portland rookie duos in the last 18 years. Add Sabonis-Trent: Arvydas Sabonis, with 755 points in 55 games, is just four shy of becoming the highest scoring Blazers rookie since Kelvin Ransey put 1,217 points on the board in 80 games during 1980-81. Sam Bowie tallied 758 points during 76 games of his first season in 1984-85 . . . Sabonis, with the NBA's fifth best field goal percentage, .554, and Trent, at .526, are Portland's two top marksmen from the floor, and are one-two in field goal accuracy among the league's rookies. A three- point play by Rod Strickland with 48.5 seconds remaining in the first overtime knotted the game and send it into the second extra session.
