PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS vs. SACRAMENTO KINGS MARCH 22, 1996 Six in a row --- The Portland Trail Blazers (32-34), head into Friday's important battle with the Sacramento Kings riding a six-game win streak, their longest in two years. The Blazers and Kings are two of five Western Conference clubs locked in a battle for the final three slots in the eight- team playoffs scheduled to begin April 25. Portland's 106-78 victory over Minnesota Tuesday was its sixth in a row and its seventh in the last nine games. The six straight is the longest current winning streak in the league. A victory over Sacramento Friday not only would strengthen Blazer hopes of making their 14th consecutive post season appearance and their 18th in the last 19 years but also would stretch their win streak to seven in a row. That would be the longest since Portland opened the 1992-93 season with eight wins in a row. The Blazers have had two six- game runs since then, the last in February of 1994. Friday's probable starters --- (F) 3 CLIFFORD ROBINSON, 6-10, 21.5 ppg, 5.7 rpg; (F) 44 HARVEY GRANT, 6-9, 9.2 ppg, 4.7 rpg; (C) 11 ARVYDAS SABONIS, 7-3, 13.8 ppg, 7.4 rpg; (G) 23 AARON MCKIE, 6-5, 10.9 ppg, 4.0 rpg; (G) 1 ROD STRICKLAND, 6-3, 19.5 ppg, 9.5 apg. The all-time series --- Portland holds a 79-46 advantage in the all-time series between the two teams but Sacramento has won two of the last three and four of the last six. The Blazers have lost three in a row in Arco Arena, including a 105-100 decision back in January and trail 37-25 in series matchups in Sacramento. The Blazers are 53-9 at home against the Kings and have won 24 of the last 25 in Portland. The Trail Blazers need a win in Friday's game to get a 2-2 split in the season series. A loss would give Sacramento its first season series win over Portland since 1984-85. This season vs. the Kings --- Buck Williams celebrated his 36th birthday by coming off the bench to score 21 points and grab 10 rebounds, and Arvydas Sabonis and Rod Strickland both had big games to lead Portland to an important 117-105 win over the Kings two weeks ago in the Rose Garden. Sabonis scored 23 points and had a career-high 17 rebounds and Strickland chipped in with 19 points and 12 assists as the Blazers passed the Kings in the race for the playoffs. That win snapped a two-game Sacramento win streak in the series. The Kings posted 105-102 and 105-100 wins, the latter coming the last time the two teams collided in Arco. Strickland led Blazers scorers with 23 points in the first one and Aaron McKie tallied 18 to top six Blazers in double figures in the second contest. Portland has outscored the Kings, 106.3- 105.0 in the three contests, shot .484 from the field to .475 by Sacramento, and banged out a 46.0-38.0 rebounding advantage. Strickland, with a 21.0 average, tops eight Blazers who have averaged in double figures against the Kings this year. Mitch Richmond has averaged 31.0 points a game to lead Sacramento scorers. Taming the Wolves --- Portland posted its 14th consecutive victory over Minnesota, storming past the Wolves, 106-78, Tuesday in the Rose Garden. The 28-point cushion was the Blazers second largest of the season. The victory, Portland's sixth in a row, gave the Blazers their fourth consecutive series sweep of Minnesota. Portland is now 26-2 all- time against the Timberwolves. The Blazers jumped to a 32-18 lead after one quarter and were ahead by as many as 31 points in the final stanza. Defense and rebounding were keys to the victory. The Blazers limited the Wolves to a 38 percent night from the field (29-77) while shooting 52 percent (36-69) themselves and outrebounded the visitors 53-28. Rod Strickland's 20 points topped all scorers in the game as all 12 Portland players put points on the board, the third time that's happened this season. Chris Dudley's 11 rebounds in 28 minutes led the Blazers domination on the boards. Race to the playoffs --- Five weeks remain in the red-hot stretch run for places in the Western Conference Playoffs scheduled to begin April 25. Five teams are locked in battle for the last three spots in the post season action. Currently, just four games separate the sixth through tenth place teams in the conference---Phoenix, Portland, Sacramento, Golden State and Denver. After their sixth straight win on Tuesday, the Blazers are in the seventh position in the conference playoff picture, just a half game back of Phoenix and 2 1/2 games ahead of Golden State and Sacramento. Among the leaders --- CLIFFORD ROBINSON'S 21.5 points per game average places him 14th among NBA scoring leaders and his 38.4 minutes per game is No. 17 in the league . . . ROD STRICKLAND is averaging 9.5 assists a game, third best in the NBA, his 19.5 ppg scoring average ranks him 26th in the league, he stands and his 38.2 minutes per game average is 19th highest . . . ARVYDAS SABONIS is sixth among the NBA's top field goal shooters with a .552 mark (300-543) in 58 games . . . CHRIS DUDLEY is 20th in the NBA in rebounding with a 9.1 average and 28th in blocked shots (1.27 per game). Buck nearing 16,000 --- Buck Williams, in his 15th NBA season, is closing in on becoming only the eighth player in the history of the NBA to record 16,000 points and 12,000 rebounds. With 16 games remaining, Williams, needs 33 points to join a select group that includes Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Wilt Chamberlain, Moses Malone, Elvin Hayes, Robert Parish, Walt Bellamy and Bob Pettit. Of those, only Parish is still an active player and all but Parish and Malone have already been inducted into Basketball's Hall of Fame. Going into Friday's contest at Sacramento, Williams has 15,967 points and 12,353 rebounds . . . Buck last week passed Pete Maravich (15,948) in 57th place on the NBA's all- time scoring list and now is 21 points behind Kiki Vandeweghe. And, a Buck in time --- Williams, who saw 77 minutes of action in his last three games, has moved into ninth place among the NBA's all-time minutes played leaders, passing Hall of Famer Hal Greer. After Tuesday's game, he has played 39,827 minutes in 1,176 games over 15 seasons. Greer totaled 39,788 minutes during his 15-year career from 1959 to 1973. The eight who have played more minutes than Buck: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Elvin Hayes, Wilt Chamberlain, John Havlicek, Moses Malone, Robert Parish, Oscar Robertson and Bill Russell. Rod perking --- Since returning to the lineup six games ago, Rod Strickland has been on a role. In the five games---all Blazers victories--- he's posted four double-doubles while averaging 21.2 points and 10.0 assists a game. His 9.5 per game assists average in 56 games, third best in the league, currently is the second highest average in the club's history to Terry Porter's 10.1 per game average in 82 games in 1987-88 Sabonis passes Bowie --- Arvydas Sabonis has passed Sam Bowie as Portland's highest scoring rookie in 15 years and now is the ninth highest in the club's history. Sabonis now has 802 points in 58 games. Bowie put 758 points on the board in 76 games in 1984-85. Kelvin Ransey, who tallied 1,217 in 80 games during the 1980-81 campaign, was the last to score more than Sabas' current total. The Rookie Combo --- Arvydas Sabonis, with 802 points, and forward Gary Trent, 501 points, make up the highest scoring Blazers rookie combination since Clifford Robinson tallied 746 points and Drazen Petrovic 583 during 1988-89, and is one of the four best Portland rookie duos in the last 18 years. The others: Sam Bowie, 758, and Steve Colter, 556, in 1984-85, and Mychal Thompson, 1,074, and Ron Brewer, 1,078, in 1978-79. Sabonis, with the NBA's fifth best field goal percentage, .552, and Trent, at .524, are Portland's two top marksmen from the floor, and are one-two in field goal accuracy among the league's rookies. Going strong --- Portland, in winning six in a row and seven of nine in March, has outscored its opponents by a 7.3 points per game margin (102.6-95.3), and had a 10.8 per game rebounding advantage (48.8- 38.0). In that stretch the Blazers have fired at a .468 clip from the field while limiting their nine foes to a .407 field goal mark. In the last four games, Portland's field goal accuracy mark is .492 (153-311) while its opponents are hitting at .374 (122-326). In the last four contests, the Blazers have outscored their opposites by 11.7 points per game and outrebounded them by 14.6 a game. Trail Blazing --- Nineteen of the Blazers' 34 setbacks have been by five points or less and 10 have been by three or under . . . Conversely, 24 of the Blazers 32 wins have been by 6 points or more and 15 have been by 10 points or more . . . The Blazers are 5-10 in games decided by three points or less, but 4-3 when the final margin is two points or under . . . Portland is 28-8 when leading going into the fourth quarter and 4-26 when tied or behind . . . It is 24-11 when holding the lead at halftime and 7-22 when trailing . . . The Blazers are 20-15 when leading after one quarter and 11-18 when behind . . . They are 23-9 when scoring more than 100 points and 21-11 when limiting opponents to under 100 points . . . Portland is 11-21 against teams with better than .500 records and 21-13 with teams at .500 or under . . . Portland is 14-4 when shooting 50 percent or better from the field and 20-7 when keeping opponents at 43 percent or under . . . Portland is averaging 99.8 points per game, a franchise all-time low. Coming into this season, the lowest average output for a full season was 103.1 ppg last year. Conversely, the 98.6 per game average thus far by Blazers opponents is below the club's best defensive effort ever when opponents averaged 99.2 ppg in 82 contests last season. On the boards --- Portland has outrebounded eight of its last 11 opponents and claimed 50 or more rebounds in six of its last 14, including 55 Sunday against Dallas and 53 Tuesday against Minnesota. The Blazers rank third overall in the NBA in rebounding percentage (.531), first in defensive rebounding (.730), and sixth in offensive rebounding (.331). For the season, Portland is outrebounding its opponents by 5.0 a game. Downing Dallas --- Portland scored the first points of the game an never looked back enroute to a 112-86 win over injury-riddled Dallas Sunday in the Rose Garden. In scoring their seasons-best fifth straight victory, the Blazers raced to a 15-point lead at the end of the first quarter and kept the margin at 10 or above the rest of the way. With Buck Williams also pulling down 13 rebounds, Portland controlled the boards, 49-37, and had a 17-10 edge on the offensive glass. Both teams shot 39 percent, Portland 29 of 74, and the Clippers 30 of 78. For the first time in 66 games going back to last season, the Blazers went without a three-point basket, shooting 0-for- 8 from beyond the arc. P.J. --- P.J. Carlesimo is in his second season as head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers. Last year, Carlesimo guided Portland to a 44-38 record, the first coach in 25 years to have moved directly from college to a head coaching job in the pros and post a winning record in his first season.
