PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS vs. VANCOUVER GRIZZLIES APRIL 2, 1996 Keeping it going --- The Portland Trail Blazers (36-35), will be looking to start April the way they finished March (winning 11 of 14, including 10 of their last 11) when they host the Vancouver Grizzlies in the Rose Garden on Tuesday. In addition to improving their two-year best homecourt winning streak to eight in a row, they will be out to make amends for two earlier season losses to the Grizzlies. Vancouver is the only expansion team to come into the league in the past decade and own a winning record over the Blazers. A win Tuesday also would move the Blazers closer to locking up their NBA-best 14th consecutive post-season playoff appearance and their 18th in the last 19 years. The Blazers go into Tuesday's action tied with Phoenix for the sixth slot in the eight-team Western Conference Playoffs and 3 1/2 games up on Sacramento. Tuesday's probable starters --- (F) 3 CLIFFORD ROBINSON, 6-10, 21.2 ppg, 5.7 rpg; (F) 44 HARVEY GRANT, 6-9, 9.1 ppg, 4.6 rpg (C) 11 ARVYDAS SABONIS, 7-3, 14.2 ppg, 7.6 rpg; (G) 23 AARON MCKIE, 6-5, 10.9 ppg, 4.0 rpg; (G) 1 ROD STRICKLAND, 6-3, 18.9 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 9.8 apg. A marvelous March --- The 15-point win over Dallas on Sunday was a perfect ending to the best March in franchise history. The Blazers finished the month winning 10 of their last 11 games for a 11-3 record and a .786 winning percentage. The best previous record for March was 13-4 (.765) by the 1989-90 team enroute to its run for the NBA title against Detroit. The 1978-79 team went 12-4 (.750) in March. Its also the best winning percentage in the last 27 months for the Blazers, going back to the 11-3 January record of the 1991-92 team. Previous to that, the 1990-91 club opened the season with an all-time franchise record 12-1 record for November. What makes the past month's effort even more special is the fact that immediately preceding it the Blazers were 4-9 in February. They had lost 9 of 11 before winning 10 of their next 11, starting with the March 8 victory over Sacramento. Buck tops 16,000 --- Buck Williams' driving layin at 10:57 of the second quarter Sunday at Dallas pushed him over the 16,000 point mark in his 15-year NBA career, making him only the eighth player in league history to have 16,000 points and 12,000 rebounds. Buck finished the game with 12 points and 5 rebounds, upping his career total to 16,011 points and 12,378 rebounds in 1,181 games. His name now goes alongside the likes of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Wilt Chamberlain, Moses Malone, Elvin Hayes, Robert Parish, Walt Bellamy and Bob Pettit, all of whom previously passed those marks. Of those, only Parish is still an active player and all but Parish and Malone have already been inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. He is one of only nine active players with 16,000 or more points and recently passed Kiki Vandeweghe as No. 57 in NBA all-time career scoring. The Grizzlies and the Blazers --- The Vancouver Grizzlies, one of the NBA's two expansion franchises this year, may be struggling to put wins on the board but so far they've found happiness with the Portland Trail Blazers. The Grizzlies have come out on top in both previous clashes between the two teams. Vancouver celebrated its maiden game in the NBA back in November with a 92-80 defeat of the Blazers that spoiled their inauguration of the new Rose Garden in Portland. The Grizzlies outscored the Blazers, 31-19, in the final period to get the win as Portland turned the ball over a season-high 26 times while shooting just 36 percent from the field and 57 percent from the line for the game. Clifford Robinson was a bright spot for the Blazers in the game with 33 points and 13 rebounds. A rematch in Vancouver on Dec. 15 also finished in favor of the Grizzlies, this time 104-100 in overtime. Portland converted at a .526 clip from the free throw line (10 of 19), that included three misses in the last 15.9 seconds of regulation. Rod Strickland led Portland in the second contest, scoring 29 points and dishing out 13 rebounds. The Blazers shot a collective .402 from the field and .551 from the line in the two games, while Vancouver converted at a .427 rate from the field and .697 from the foul stripe. Going for 22 in a row --- The Trail Blazers need just one more victory to rack up their 22nd consecutive season with at least 37 wins. The closest any franchise in the NBA can come to that record is Seattle with at least 31 victories for 22 campaigns. Race to the playoffs --- Portland's win at Dallas Sunday, coupled with Phoenix's loss to San Antonio, pulled the Blazers into a tie with the Suns for the sixth slot in the Western Conference Playoffs scheduled to get underway April 25. The win also allowed the Blazers, who have 11 games remaining, to maintain a 3 1/2 game lead on Sacramento, in currently in the eighth position, and four full games on Golden State in No. 9. Two straight in Texas --- Portland made it two in a row on their weekend invasion of Texas with a 115-100 win at Dallas on Sunday. The victory, the second in two nights by a 15-point margin, extended the club's current win streak to four in a row and 10 of its last 11. Strong performances by a host of Blazers, led by Arvydas Sabonis, Clifford Robinson and Rod Strickland, sparked effort. Portland built a 91-68 lead after three quarters, connected on 47 of 84 from the field (56 percent), and outscored the Mavs, 58-34, in the paint. Sabonis led all scorers in the game with 21 points on a 9-of-11 field goal effort in 24 minutes, Robinson tallied 17 points and Rod Strickland had his third consecutive double- double with 11 points and 13 assists. Buck Williams scored his 16,001st career point in the opening moments of the second quarter. Tony Dumas led Dallas in scoring with 15 points. The Mavericks finished with a .466 (41-88) shot chart. It was Portland's third win in a row over Dallas. Defense doing it --- The Trail Blazers' defense deserves a big part of the credit in the club's winning 10 of its last 11 games. In the 11-game stretch Portland has limited its foes to a combined field goal percentage of .398 . in eight of the 11 outings, Blazers foes shot under 43 percent . . . Portland has held its opponents to 100 points or under in each of the last nine games, and under 80 points three times . . . For the month of March, during which the Blazers won 11 of 14 games, the defense limited opponent field goal shooting to a .406 mark. So to, the offense... --- Over the same 14 games in March, the Blazers converted at a .473 rate from the field and outscored their opponents by an average of 8.6 points per game . . . Portland has outscored its last 11 opponents by 12.7 points per game (102.6-89.9), and has a 9.0 per game rebounding advantage (47.7-38.7) . . . The Blazers swished 56 percent of their field goal attempts against Dallas, marking the fifth time in the last nine games they've bettered the 50 percent mark from the floor. Pounding the boards --- Portland has outrebounded 13 of its last 16 opponents, has averaged 48.4 retrieves in its last eight games, has grabbed 50 or more misses 19 times this season and in three of its last eight . . . The Blazers rank third overall in the NBA in rebounding percentage (.531), first in defensive rebounding (.729), and sixth in offensive rebounding (.333). For the season, Portland is outrebounding its opponents by 5.2 a game . . . And, the Blazers prove rebounding is a team effort; they are among the elite in the league in that category even though their leading boards man, Chris Dudley, has a 9.1 average and ranks 21st in the league in rebounding. Among the leaders --- CLIFFORD ROBINSON'S 21.2 points per game average places him 13th among NBA scoring leaders and his 38.1 minutes per game is No. 20 in the league . . . ROD STRICKLAND is averaging 9.8 assists a game, second only to John Stockton among the NBA leaders, his 18.9 ppg scoring average ranks him 29th in the league, and his 38.1 minutes per game average is 19th highest . . . ARVYDAS SABONIS is sixth among the NBA's top field goal shooters with a .560 mark (339-605) in 63 games . . . CHRIS DUDLEY is 21st in the NBA in rebounding with a 9.1 average and 26th in blocked shots (1.28 per game). Sabonis passes Bowie --- Arvydas Sabonis has passed Sam Bowie as Portland's highest scoring rookie in 15 years and now is the ninth highest in the club's history. Sabonis now has 897 points in 63 games. Bowie put 758 points on the board in 76 games in 1984-85. Kelvin Ransey, who tallied 1,217 in 80 games during the 1980-81 campaign, was the last rookie to score more than Sabas' current total. Trail Blazing --- Twenty of the Blazers' 35 setbacks have been by five points or less and 11 have been by three or under . . . Conversely, 27 of the Blazers 36 wins have been by 6 points or more, 18 have been by 10 points or higher, and five have been by more than 20 . . . The Blazers are 5-11 in games decided by three points or less and 9-20 when the margin is five points or under but 18-10 when the difference is 10 points or more . . . Portland is 32-9 when leading going into the fourth quarter and 4-26 when tied or behind . . . It is 28-11 when holding the lead at halftime and 7-23 when trailing . . . The Blazers are 22-15 when leading after one quarter and 13-20 when behind or tied . . . They are 25-9 when scoring more than 100 points and 24-12 when limiting opponents to under 100 points . . . Portland is 12-21 against teams with better than .500 records and 24-14 with teams at .500 or under . . . Portland is 16-4 when shooting 50 percent or better from the field and 22-7 when keeping opponents at 43 percent or under . . . In winning 36 games, the Blazers victory margin averages 11.3 points; in its 35 losses, the margin is 7.7 points a game. Going back-to-back --- Sunday's contest in Dallas closed out the 16th of 19 back-to-back sets of games (contests on consecutive nights) on the Blazers' 1995-96 schedule. The sweep of Houston and Dallas on consecutive nights brought its record in back-to-back action this season to 15-17. The Blazers are 7-8 in second games of two-night combos and are 4-6 when the second game occurs on the road. It was the third back- to-back sweep by Portland this season; the Blazers also have been swept three times. The next two back-to-back ordeals start this weekend when Portland plays four games in five nights, starting at Denver Friday and continuing the next night in the Rose Garden against Seattle. Shooting down the Rockets --- Portland outscored Houston, 81-63, in the final three periods enroute to a 109-94 victory over the two-time world champs Saturday at The Summit. Clifford Robinson led all scorers in the game with 25 points and had a game-high 10 rebounds. Rod Strickland, despite being slowed by strained groin, equalled his career high with 20 assists and added 10 points in 34 minutes for his 30th double-double of the season. Portland shot 54 percent from the field, thanks in part to a season-high 37 assists, the most in two years. The Blazers turned the ball over just 8 times, one off their season low, and committed only 11 fouls, one shy of their all-time low. Robert Horry's 23 points topped the injury-plagued Rockets, who shot 46 percent. Portland outrebounded Houston, 42-33, and had a huge 72-44 scoring edge in the paint. The victory earned Portland a 2-2 split in the season series with the Rockets. P.J. --- P.J. Carlesimo is in his second season as head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers. Last year, Carlesimo guided Portland to a 44-38 record, the first coach in 25 years to have moved directly from college to a head coaching job in the pros and post a winning record in his first season. The last coach to make the successful jump in one season was Cotton Fitzsimmons, who went from Kansas State to Phoenix to guide the Suns to a 48-34 in 1970-71. Going into the Grizzlies contest, P.J. has a two-season mark of 80-73 in Portland. Four games in five days --- The Blazers get two days off after Tuesday's clash with the Grizzlies then embark on a rugged four-games- in-five-days schedule that has them playing three games on the road and one at home---against Western Conference leader Seattle. Portland opens the crucial slate of games Friday at Denver (6 p.m., KEX Radio) then return home the next night to take on Seattle (7 p.m., KEX Radio, BlazerVision).
