PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS at DENVER NUGGETS APRIL 5, 1996 Keeping it going --- The Portland Trail Blazers (37-35), will be looking to extend their current win streak to six in a row, equalling the team's season best, when they open a tough four-games-in-five-nights slate Friday in Denver. For the Blazers, who will be shooting for their 12th victory in their last 13 contests and a chance to move three games above .500 for the first time this season, every outing looms large in their quest to lock up a berth in Western Conference Playoffs that begin in three weeks. Portland is battling to make a league-best 14th consecutive playoff appearance and its 18th in the last 19 years. A victory Friday in McNichols Arena also would give the Blazers a sweep of their four-game season series with the Nuggets. Friday's probable starters --- (F) 3 CLIFFORD ROBINSON, 6-10, 21.2 ppg, 5.7 rpg; (F) 52 BUCK WILLIAMS, 6-8, 6.8 ppg, 5.8 rpg (C) 11 ARVYDAS SABONIS, 7-3, 14.2 ppg, 7.8 rpg; (G) 23 AARON MCKIE, 6-5, 11.0 ppg, 3.9 rpg; (G) 1 ROD STRICKLAND, 6-3, 18.7 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 9.8 apg. Sabonis NBA Player of the Week --- Arvydas Sabonis, Portland's 7- foot-3 rookie center from Lithuania, was named NBA Player of The Week for the period ending March 31 for his role in the team's perfect 4-0 run through Sunday's 15-point win over Dallas. Sabonis, European Player of the Year in 1995, averaged 20.3 points, 9.5 rebounds, 2.3 blocked shots and 2.0 assists while playing an average of 27.8 minutes. One of the league's top field goal shooters, he converted 35 of 54 field goal attempts during the week for a .648 percentage, and was 4 of 7 from three-point range. He is the second Trail Blazer to earn NBA Player of the Week honors this season and the first Blazers rookie to gain overall NBA recognition since 1981. Clifford Robinson was honored earlier this year for his play in the week ending Jan. 7. First-year guard Kelvin Ransey was selected NBA Player of the Month in March, 1981. More Sabonis: He is the highest scoring Blazers rookie in 15 years and the ninth highest in the club's history (911 points in 64 games through Tuesday), and has been a key to Portland winning 11 of its last 12 games. In that stretch he has averaged 18.5 points and 10.5 rebounds, led the team in scoring six times and in rebounding five times, shot 61 percent from the field (79- 130) and 42 percent (8-19) from three-point range, while averaging 26 minutes in 11 starts. The Blazers and Nuggets --- Portland has captured three in a row from the Nuggets this season to open its lead in the all-time series between the two teams to 52-37. The Blazers have won two in a row in McNichols Arena, including a 118-117 squeeker on their first visit to the Mile High City back in January. However, Portland trails 28-16 in games played in Denver. The Blazers have won two in a row and 11 of the last 12 games against the Nuggets in Portland and have a 36-9 homecourt advantage in the series. They swept both games played in the Rose Garden this season, winning by a combined 47 points in the two games (87-69 and 107-78). Portland and Denver this season --- Portland put together one of its best halves of the year on its last visit to Denver on Jan. 13, outscoring the Nuggets, 71-51, before intermission. But the Blazers had to hold off a furious second half Denver rally to escape with the victory. Rod Strickland, who led Portland with 29 points and 16 rebounds, hit two key free throws and Arvydas Sabonis had a big defensive rebound and a free throw with 6 seconds left to ice the victory. The Blazers shot a season- high 59 percent and Denver 52 percent. Three nights later in Portland, the Blazers limited Denver to a franchise low in beating the Nuggets, 87- 69. Clifford Robinson led all scorers with 24 points, including a team record five-of-five from three-point range in the first half. Portland had a 45 percent shot chart for the game, and Denver 38 percent. In game No. 3, Portland posted its biggest winning margin of the season, 107-78, snapping a six-game homecourt losing streak. Portland fired at a 48 percent clip from the field while limiting Denver to 38 percent shooting and had a 53-25 rebounding edge. In the three games, Portland outscored the Nuggets, 104.0-88.0, outrebounded them 48.3-32.0, and turned in a .506 field goal effort to .429 by Denver. Strickland, with a 21.5 average, and Robinson at 20.0, led Blazers scorers. Race to the playoffs --- With Tuesday's win over Vancouver, Portland kept pace with Phoenix in the heated battle for positioning in the upcoming Western Conference Playoffs. The Blazers and the Suns, who are scheduled to host Utah on Thursday, are tied for the playoff's sixth slot, four games ahead of Sacramento, six games ahead of Denver and 6 1/2 up on Golden State. The Nuggets and Warriors, who face each other Thursday in Oakland, are both still in the running for the playoffs. Getting the Griz --- The Blazers wasted little time in their 'payback' game with the Vancouver Grizzlies, jumping to a 22-8 lead in the first eight minutes enroute to an 101-85 homecourt victory Tuesday. The win took some of the sting out of two previous setbacks at the hands of the expansion Grizzlies, who suffered their 23rd straight loss. Portland led, 29-16, after one quarter and had a 60-36 cushion at halftime. Clifford Robinson scored 19 points to lead six Blazers in double-figure scoring and Arvydas Sabonis had 14 points and 13 rebounds. Greg Anthony topped Vancouver with 16 points. Portland shot 51 percent for the game while holding the Grizzlies to 35 percent from the field and outrebounded the visitors, 53-33, including a 42-22 advantage on the defensive boards. A marvelous March --- March went out as the best in franchise history. The Blazers finished the month winning 10 of their last 11 games for a 11-3 record and a .786 winning percentage. The best previous record for March was 13-4 (.765) by the 1989-90 team enroute to its run for the NBA title against Detroit. The 1978-79 team went 12-4 (.750) in March. Its also the best winning percentage in the last 27 months for the Blazers, going back to the 11-3 January record of the 1991-92 team. Previous to that, the 1990-91 club opened the season with an all-time franchise record 12-1 record for November. What makes the past month's effort even more special is the fact that immediately preceding it the Blazers were 4-9 in February. They had lost 9 of 11 before winning 10 of their next 11, starting with the March 8 victory over Sacramento. Blazer Bites --- ---The Trail Blazers currently share the best record in the league over the last 10 games with division leaders Seattle, Chicago and San Antonio. All four teams were 9-1 after Tuesday's action. ---Portland, with five wins in a row heading into Denver, has the second longest current streak in the league behind Seattle's seven straight. ---The Blazers have limited nine of their last 12 opponents to under 43 percent field goal shooting and have held six of them under 40 percent. Collectively, the 12 foes have managed to make just .395 of their attempts from the floor. In the same 12-game span, the Portland offense has clicked at a .483 field goal rate, including six games when they converted 50 percent or more of their shots. ---In the last three games the Blazers have converted better than 50 percent of their shots from the field and collectively have a .537 field goal mark (132-246). ---Portland has outscored its last 12 opponents by an average of 13.0 points a game, held nine of them under 100 points and seven under 90 points. Carlesimo employed his 17th different starting five in the Vancouver game. So far, he has used just 11 different players to make up the 17 starting combinations. Elmore Spencer is the only player on the current roster not to get at least one starting call. Trail Blazing --- Twenty of the Blazers' 35 setbacks have been by five points or less and 11 have been by three or under . . . Conversely, 28 of the Blazers 37 wins have been by 6 points or more, 19 have been by 10 points or higher, and five have been by more than 20 . . . The Blazers are 5-11 in games decided by three points or less and 9-20 when the margin is five points or under but 19-10 when the difference is 10 points or more . . . Buck tops 16,000 --- Buck Williams' driving layin at 10:57 of the second quarter Sunday at Dallas pushed him over the 16,000 point mark in his 15-year NBA career, making him only the eighth player in league history to have 16,000 points and 12,000 rebounds. Buck finished the game with 12 points and 5 rebounds. After Tuesday's action, his career total now reads 16,015 points and 12,380 rebounds in 1,182 games. His name now goes alongside the likes of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Wilt Chamberlain, Moses Malone, Elvin Hayes, Robert Parish, Walt Bellamy and Bob Pettit, all of whom previously passed those marks. Of those, only Parish is still an active player and all but Parish and Malone have already been inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. He is one of only nine active players with 16,000 or more points and recently passed Kiki Vandeweghe as No. 57 in NBA all-time career scoring. 22 seasons in a row --- Tuesday's 101-85 win over Vancouver upped Portland's record to 37-35, giving the Blazers their 22nd consecutive seasons with 37 or more wins. The closest any team in the league can come to that mark is 31 or more wins over the same 22 seasons by Seattle. The string 37-plus win seasons goes back to 1974-75. The only years Portland did not reached 37 wins were in the franchise's first four seasons. Last year, Carlesimo guided Portland to a 44-38 record, the first coach in 25 years to have moved directly from college to a head coaching job in the pros and post a winning record in his first season. The last coach to make the successful jump in one season was Cotton Fitzsimmons, who went from Kansas State to Phoenix to guide the Suns to a 48-34 in 1970-71.
