PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS at LOS ANGELES CLIPPERS APRIL 8, 1996 Red hot and rolling, again --- The Portland Trail Blazers are 39-35 after Saturday's 95-92 homecourt win over the Seattle SuperSonics. The Blazers will be looking to extend their current season-best winning streak to eight in a row when they invade the Sports Arena Monday to play the Los Angeles Clippers. Portland will be looking to move closer to locking up their league-best 14th consecutive playoff berth and the 18th in the last 19 years when they take on the Clippers in the third outing of a five- games-in-seven nights slate. They also will be out to capture their season series with Los Angeles, three games to one. Portland is back at it tomorrow night in a crucial matchup with the Suns in Phoenix. For the record: --- Portland has won seven in a row, 12 of its last 13 and 14 of 17 since March 1. The seven straight is the league's longest current streak. --- A victory over the Clippers Monday would extend the Blazers win streak to eight in a row. That would be Portland's longest run of consecutive wins since opening the 1992-93 season 8-0. The franchise record of 16 in a row was set in the final two months of the 1990-91 season. --- Portland posted its ninth straight victory in the Rose Garden Saturday. That's the most since the 1993-94 team won 11 in a row at home in March. --- The Blazers could extend their road winning streak to four Monday by defeating the Clippers. That would be the most since the 1991-92 team won four straight in March. The Portland record is nine in a row in 1990- 91. --- After defeating Seattle Saturday, Portland extended its record since March 8 to 13-1. That's the NBA's best mark for that span, better even than Chicago, San Antonio and Seattle---all divisional leaders. While Portland is 13-1 (.929) in that period, San Antonio has a 14-2 record (.875), Chicago 11-2 (.846) and Seattle 12-3 (.800). At 39-35, the Blazers are four games above .500. One month ago, they were eight games under (26-34). Magic number --- The magic number for Portland to lock up its league- best 14th consecutive Western Conference playoff berth and its 18th in the last 19 seasons is 2---any combination of wins by the Blazers or losses by Golden State totalling 2. The Warriors currently have the ninth best conference record. Monday's probable starters --- (F) 3 CLIFFORD ROBINSON, 6-10, 21.2 ppg, 5.8 rpg; (F) 44 HARVEY GRANT, 6-9, 9.0 ppg, 4.6 rpg (C) 11 ARVYDAS SABONIS, 7-3, 14.2 ppg, 7.7 rpg; (G) 23 AARON MCKIE, 6-5, 10.9 ppg, 3.9 rpg; (G) 1 ROD STRICKLAND, 6-3, 18.9 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 9.7 apg. Blazers-Clippers series --- Portland has won seven of the last eight meetings with the Clippers and commands the all-time series between the two teams, 96-42. On the Clippers court, the Blazers have a 38-31 edge even though Los Angeles won the last time out. In Portland, the Blazers have won nine in a row and own a huge 58-11 series lead. A victory Monday would give Portland the season series, three games to one, up their all-time series count versus the Clippers 20-1-5. Portland and LA this season --- Portland defended its own court by beating the Clippers 113-94 and 86-79 in Games 1 and 3 of this season's matchup with the Clippers. In the first game, Rod Strickland scored 27 points, Clifford Robinson 25 and Arvydas Sabonis 20 to pace the Portland victory. In Game 3, Sabonis was the Blazers' big scorer with 23 points as Portland used defense and strong rebounding to subdue the visitors. The Clippers, playing in Anaheim's Arrowhead Pond, took the middle game, 100-96, on Feb. 17, breaking a seven-game Blazers win streak in the series. Strickland and Sabonis were Portland's high scorers with 25 and 22 points each. In the three games, Portland has outscored the Clips, 98.3-91.0, outrebounded them 41.0-34.7 and shot .478 from the field, compared with the LA team's .455 shot chart. Race to the playoffs --- After Saturday's win over Seattle, the Trail Blazers moved a full game ahead of the Phoenix Suns in their battle for the sixth slot in the Western Conference Playoffs 18 days away, and 4 1/2 games ahead of 8th place Sacramento. The Suns, Portland's opponent tomorrow night in Phoenix, were at Vancouver and the Kings hosted Utah in Sunday games. Sonics victim No. 7 --- Portland's defense shined down the stretch as the Blazers posted their seventh straight win, defeating Western Conference leader Seattle, 95-92, in a high-energy game before a Rose Garden sellout of 21,401 Saturday. The victory broke a nine-game Sonics win streak. After building slim a 91-87 lead with 3:21 remaining, The Blazers stole the ball on four of Seattle's last six possessions. Buck Williams, who finished with 12 points, had two of the steals, a driving layin, an offensive rebound and two free throws in the game's final two minutes for a big role in the Blazers win. Portland had seven of is 12 steals in the game in the fourth quarter. Rod Strickland, with a game-high 19 points, led six Blazers in double-figure scoring. Sam Perkins and Vincent Askew both scored 17 points to lead Seattle. Field goal shooting was virtually even, 47 percent for the Sonics and 46 percent for Portland, but the Blazers had the edge on the backboards, 43-35. Arvydas Sabonis led all rebounders with 12. Sabonis NBA Player of the Week --- Arvydas Sabonis, Portland's 7- foot-3 rookie center from Lithuania, was named NBA Player of The Week for the period ending March 31 for his role in the team's 4-0 run. Sabonis, European Player of the Year in 1995, averaged 20.3 points, 9.5 rebounds, 2.3 blocked shots and 2.0 assists while playing an average of 27.8 minutes. One of the league's top field goal shooters, he converted 35 of 54 field goal attempts during the week for a .648 percentage, and was 4 of 7 from three-point range. A marvelous March --- March went out as the best in franchise history. The Blazers finished the month winning 10 of their last 11 games for a 11-3 record and a .786 winning percentage. The best previous record for March was 13-4 (.765) by the 1989-90 team enroute to its run for the NBA title against Detroit. The 1978-79 team went 12-4 (.750) in March. Its also the best winning percentage in the last 27 months for the Blazers, going back to the 11-3 January record of the 1991-92 team. Previous to that, the 1990-91 club opened the season with an all-time franchise record 12-1 record for November. What makes the past month's effort even more special is the fact that immediately preceding it the Blazers were 4-9 in February. They had lost 9 of 11 before winning 10 of their next 11, starting with the March 8 victory over Sacramento. Blazer Bites ---The Blazers have limited nine of their last 14 opponents to under 43 percent field goal shooting and have held six of them under 40 percent. Collectively, the 14 foes have managed to make just .404 of their attempts from the floor. The closest any team in the league can come to that mark is 31 or more wins over the same 22 seasons by Seattle. The string of 37-plus win seasons goes back to 1974-75.
