A win would assure the Blazers of their 17th winning season in the last two decades and would help strengthen their grip on the No. 6 seed in the upcoming Western Conference Playoffs. Portland now has a two- game lead on Phoenix, a team it defeated in the Valley of the Sun on Tuesday, for the sixth position. With five games remaining, a win Sunday also would assure the Blazers of no worse than seventh in the playoff bracket. Portland will also be looking for its second win in a row over Vancouver that would give them a season-split and take some of the sting out of two early season losses to the Grizzlies. The Blazers closed out a tough five-games-in-seven-nights schedule Thursday with a 114-85 win over Dallas, finishing the stretch by winning four out of five. That put Portland five games over the .500 mark for the first time this season. A little over a month ago, after losing 10 of 12 games the Blazers had dropped eight games below the break-even mark. Since that time, they've been the hottest team in the league, going 15-2, including winning four out of six on the road. Sunday's probable starters --- (F) 3 CLIFFORD ROBINSON, 6-10, 20.9 ppg, 5.8 rpg; (F) 44 HARVEY GRANT, 6-9, 9.3 ppg, 4.6 rpg (C) 11 ARVYDAS SABONIS, 7-3, 14.5 ppg, 8.0 rpg; (G) 23 AARON MCKIE, 6-5, 10.7 ppg, 3.8 rpg; (G) 1 ROD STRICKLAND, 6-3, 18.8 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 9.5 apg. The hottest team in the league --- Since Portland started its current run of successes on March 8, it is the league's hottest team, even ahead of division leaders Seattle, Chicago and San Antonio. After Thursday's win over Dallas, the Blazers are 15-2 since March 8, (88.2%). In the same span San Antonio is 16-3 (84.2%), Seattle 15-3 (83.3%) and Chicago 13- 3 (81.2%). The other three teams have a collective win-loss mark for the season of 184-46. The Blazers & Grizzlies --- Portland heads into Vancouver Sunday looking to earn a split in their first season series with the Grizzlies. The Grizzlies are the only expansion franchise to come into the league in the last decade to have a winning record over Portland. Before defeating the Grizzlies in the Rose Garden two weeks ago, 101-85, the Blazers had dropped two straight to the Canadian club, including a disheartening 92- 80 setback that spoiled the inauguration of Portland's brand new Rose Garden. The Grizzlies made it two in a row with a 104-100 overtime victory in General Motors Centre in December. In the two losses, Portland struggled from both the field and the free throw line, shooting a collective .402 in field goals and .551 from the charity stripe. Vancouver answered by converting at a .427 field goal and .697 free throw rate. In the last outing, Portland wasted little time in establishing command, jumping out to a 22-8 lead in the game's first eight minutes. The Blazers shot 51 percent in that game while holding the Grizzlies to 35 percent and dominated the boards, 53-33. Clifford Robinson, with a 23.7 points per game average, and Rod Strickland, 22.0 ppg, are Portland's two leading scorers versus the Griz this season. Chris Dudley has averaged 11.0 rebounds a contest to lead the Blazers effort that has tamed Vancouver on the boards, 51.0-40.0 in the three outings. Fourth longest run in sports --- Portland is headed for its 14th consecutive Western Conference Playoff appearance, the longest such current streak in the NBA and the fourth longest in all of professional sports. Only the Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks and St. Louis Blues of the National Hockey League have made more current playoff appearance than the Blazers. The Utah Jazz, making the playoffs for the 13th consecutive year this spring, is the closest any NBA club can come. The Boston Bruins current run of 29 in a row is an all-time professional sports record. The Syracuse Nationals-Philadelphia 76ers' 22 in a row from 1950 to 1971 is the most ever in the NBA. Race to the playoffs --- The Trail Blazers are currently in the sixth playoff slot, two games ahead of Phoenix and 5 1/2 games ahead of Sacramento in the No. 8 position. The Blazers now are looking at a magic number of '1' (either a Portland win or a Sacramento loss) to be assured of no lower than the seventh seed in the eight-team conference playoffs starting April 25. Sweeping the Mavericks --- Portland swept the Dallas Mavericks for the fourth time in seven years while posting its 10th straight homecourt win, 114-99, on Thursday. It was the Blazers 15th win in their last 17 games. Arvydas Sabonis with 21 points and 15 rebounds in 23 minutes (his sixth consecutive double-double), led six teammates in double-figure scoring as all 12 Blazers put points on the board for the fourth time this season. Portland fired at a 51 percent clip from the field (45-89) while holding the Mavs to 37 percent (37-101). Dallas tied an all-time Blazers opponent record by attempting 40 three-pointers (making 10). The Blazers had a 59-45 rebounding advantage, including 46-29 on the defensive boards. Portland outscored Dallas in the paint, 62-36, had a 28-20 advantage in fast break points while the Blazers bench outscored the Mavs reserves, 55-27. 10 straight in the Garden --- The Blazers extended their winning string in the Rose Garden to 10 in a row Thursday, their longest run of successes in two years. It is just one victory shy of their best since opening the 1993-94 season by winning 11 in a row at home. Before that, Portland had streaks of 13 straight during both the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons. The Blazers' all-time longest one-season home winning streak was 26 in a row in 1977-78. Over two seasons, beginning with the last eight games of 1976-77 and continuing through the three months of the next season, Portland won 34 straight in Memorial Coliseum, the fifth longest consecutive home streak in NBA history. Sabonis NBA Player of the Week --- Arvydas Sabonis, Portland's 7- foot-3 rookie center from Lithuania, was named NBA Player of The Week for the period ending March 31 for his role in the team's 4-0 run. Sabonis, European Player of the Year in 1995, averaged 20.3 points, 9.5 rebounds, 2.3 blocked shots and 2.0 assists while playing an average of 27.8 minutes. One of the league's top field goal shooters, he converted 35 of 54 field goal attempts during the week for a .648 percentage, and was 4 of 7 from three-point range. He is the second Trail Blazer to earn NBA Player of the Week honors this season and the first Blazers rookie to gain overall NBA recognition since 1981. Clifford Robinson was honored earlier this year for his play in the week ending Jan. 7. More Sabonis --- He is the highest scoring Blazers rookie in 15 years (998 points in 69 games through Thursday) and, with two more points, will become only the eighth Portland first-year player to score 1,000 or more points in a season. More importantly, he has been a big factor in Portland's recent run of successes. In his last 16 games he has averaged 18.2 points and 11.0 rebounds, blocked 28 shots, led the team in scoring eight times and in rebounding nine times, recorded 10 double-doubles, shot 52 percent from the field (100-184), and averaged 26.1 minutes in 16 starts. Defense doing it ---The Blazers have limited 11 of their last 17 opponents to under 43 percent field goal shooting and have held seven of them under 40 percent. Collectively, the 17 foes have managed to make just .409 of their shots . . . In the same 17-game span, the Portland offense has clicked at a .466 field goal rate, including seven games when they converted 50 percent or more of their shots . . . Portland has outscored its last 16 opponents by an average of 10.3 points a game, held 13 of them under 100 points and seven under 90. More defense --- Thus far in the season, the Blazers have clamped down on opponent field goal shooting at a team-record pace. Through 77 games, Portland opponents have converted just .444 of their shots from the field, which is below the club's all-time defensive low for a season, .449 by the 1977-78 team . . . The .444 field goal mark by opponents is the sixth lowest in the NBA going into Sunday's game . . . Portland opponents have been held to a 97.4 points per game average, nearly two points a contest under the all-time opponent low of 99.2 last year. Portland's defense is now the 10th toughest in the league for points allowed. Trail Blazing --- Twenty of the Blazers' 36 setbacks have been by five points or less and 11 have been by three or under . . . Conversely, 31 of the Blazers 41 wins have been by 6 points or more, 20 have been by 10 points or higher, and five have been by more than 20 . . . The Blazers are 6-11 in games decided by three points or less and 10-20 when the margin is five points or under but 20-11 when the difference is 10 points or more . . . Portland is 37-9 when leading going into the fourth quarter and 4-27 when tied or behind . . . It is 31-11 when holding the lead at halftime and 8-24 when trailing . . . The Blazers are 26-16 when leading after one quarter and 14-20 when behind or tied . . . They are 27-9 when scoring more than 100 points and 28-12 when limiting opponents to under 100 points . . . Portland is 14-21 against teams with better than .500 records and 27-15 with teams at .500 or under . . . Portland is 18-4 when shooting 50 percent or better from the field and 25-7 when keeping opponents at 43 percent or under . . . In winning 41 games, the Blazers victory margin averages 11.1 points; in its 36 losses, the margin is 7.9 points a game . . . Portland is 16-10 against teams from the Midwest Division, 9-4 against them at home and is 26-21 overall in Western Conference action. Pounding the boards --- Portland, one of the league's premier rebounding teams over the last eight seasons (never finishing lower than fifth), is at it again. The Blazers have outrebounded 18 of their last 22 opponents, have averaged 49.0 retrieves in their last 14 games, have grabbed 50 or more misses six times in their 14 games and 22 times total this season . . . The Blazers lead the NBA in defensive rebounding percentage (.731), are third in total rebounding percentage (.532), and sixth in offensive rebounding (.333). For the season, Portland is outrebounding its opponents by 5.5 a game for the season and has a 9.9 per game average over the last 17 games . . . The Blazers make rebounding is a team effort; they are among the elite in the league in that category even though their leading rebounders, Chris Dudley and Arvydas Sabonis, rank just 22nd and 29th among league's leaders with 8.9 and 8.0 per game averages respectively. Among the leaders --- CLIFFORD ROBINSON'S 20.9 points per game average places him 14th among NBA scoring leaders and his 38.0 minutes per game is No. 18 in the league . . . ROD STRICKLAND is averaging 9.5 assists a game, third highest among NBA leaders, his 18.8 ppg scoring average ranks him 30th in the league, he's 23rd in steals with a 1.45 average, and his 37.8 minutes per game average is 20th highest . . . ARVYDAS SABONIS is seventh among the NBA's top field goal shooters with a .546 mark (371-680) in 69 games, ranks 29th in rebounding (8.0 per game), and 34th in blocked shots (1.04 a game) . . . CHRIS DUDLEY is 22nd in the NBA in rebounding with a 8.9 average and 27th in blocked shots (1.24 per game). 22 in a row --- The 101-85 win over Vancouver on April 2 assured the Blazers of their 22nd consecutive season with at least 37 wins. The closest any team in the league can come to that mark is at least 31 wins over the same 22 seasons by Seattle. The string of 37-plus win seasons goes back to 1974-75. The only years Portland did not reached that number were in the franchise's first four seasons. Mixing and matching --- P.J. Carlesimo has employed 17 different starting lineups this season, using just 11 players to make up those combinations. No Blazer has started every game this season and only Elmore Spencer on the current roster has yet to get at least one starting call. In winning 15 of the last 17 games, Carlesimo has called out seven different starting units involving nine of his 12 players. Blazers to honor Glickman --- Special ceremonies prior to Monday's game with San Antonio will pay tribute to Trail Blazer President Emeritus Harry Glickman. It was Glickman who secured a National Basketball Association franchise for Portland in 1970 and then served as the club's first executive vice president and later president. Glickman, enshrined in the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame, was named Portland's First Citizen for civic leadership in 1992. A Portland native, he also was responsible for bringing professional hockey back to Portland in 1960, organizing the highly successful Portland Buckaroo franchise of the old Western Hockey League. P.J. --- P.J. Carlesimo is in his second season as head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers. Last year, Carlesimo guided Portland to a 44-38 record, the first coach in 25 years to have moved directly from college to a head coaching job in the pros and post a winning record in his first season. The last coach to make the successful jump in one season was Cotton Fitzsimmons, who went from Kansas State to Phoenix to guide the Suns to a 48-34 in 1970-71. Going into the Dallas game, P.J. has a two-season mark of 85-74 in Portland. Grizzlies next --- After Vancouver, the Blazers have four regular season games remaining. They return home to face the San Antonio Spurs on Monday (7 p.m., KEX Radio, BlazerVision), face the Sonics in Seattle on Wednesday (7 p.m., KEX Radio, KGW-TV), play next Friday at Golden State (7 p.m., KEX Radio) then host the Los Angeles Lakers in the finale next Sunday, in the Rose Garden (6 p.m., KEX Radio, BlazerVision).
