PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS vs. GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS APRIL 19, 1996 Two to go --- The Portland Trail Blazers (43-37), winners of four of their last five games, 11 of their last 13 and 17 of their last 20, can equal last year's win total with a victory at Golden State Friday. Portland, with the sixth seed in the Western Conference Playoffs locked up, dropped a 96- 90 decision at Seattle Wednesday. The loss put a slight damper on what has proved to be one of the best season- finishing runs in franchise history. Portland, winner of five of its last eight road games, extended its best homecourt win streak in two years to 11 straight with the victory over the Spurs Monday. At 43-37, the Blazers are a game up on where they were after 80 games last year. With back-to-back wins over Vancouver and San Antonio earlier this week, the Blazers assured themselves of finishing with a winning record for the 17th time in the last 20 seasons. Friday's probable starters --- (F) 3 CLIFFORD ROBINSON, 6-10, 20.9 ppg, 5.7 rpg; (F) 44 HARVEY GRANT, 6-9, 9.3 ppg, 4.7 rpg (C) 11 ARVYDAS SABONIS, 7-3, 14.5 ppg, 8.1 rpg; (G) 23 AARON MCKIE, 6-5, 10.7 ppg, 3.8 rpg; (G) 21 RUMEAL ROBINSON, 6-2, 5.8 ppg, 1.8 rpg, 3.1 apg. INJURY REPORT: ROD STRICKLAND is expected to miss his second straight game and his fifth in the last 21 because of a strained left groin. The big turnaround --- Five weeks ago, the Blazers had lost 10 out of 12, dropped eight games below .500 at 26-34 and were in danger of missing the playoffs for the first time in 14 years and only the second time since 1977. Since March 8, they have staged an incredible turnaround by any measurement. They have won 17 of 20 games, are six games above the break-even mark and have locked up the sixth seed in the Western Conference Playoffs. In the 17-3 run, Portland has registered wins over the Lakers, Houston and Phoenix, all on the road, and division champions Seattle and San Antonio at home. The Blazers have outscored their last 20 opponents by 9.7 points a game, outrebounded them by 10.0 a game and limited their opponents to a combined field goal mark of 41 percent while converting at a 46 percent rate themselves. Portland has held 14 of its 20 opponents under 100 points, scored double-digit victories eight times and had cushions of 21 or more points in five of the victories. Running hot --- Since Portland started its current run of successes on March 8, it is one of the league's hottest teams in company with division champions Seattle, Chicago and San Antonio. The Blazers are 17-3 in the five-week span---(.850). In the same time frame Chicago is 16-3 (.842), San Antonio 18-4 (.818), and Seattle 16-4 (.800). Those three teams have a collective win-loss mark for the season of 190-48 (.798). 11 straight in the Garden --- Monday night's win over San Antonio was the Blazers' 11th in a row at home, equalling the longest home streak since Portland opened the 1993-94 season by winning 11 straight in Memorial Coliseum. The longest prior to that was 13 in a row during both 1990-91 and 1991-92. A fast finish --- The Blazers are on track for winding up with the team's best March-April record of the 1990s. Wins in the final two games of the season would give them the best finish since 1990. Going into the Golden State game, Portland's record for the span is 18-5. The 1990-91 team that finished with the franchise's best record ever, 63-19, was 19-6 for the two months, including an all-time best April of 10-1. The year before, when the Blazers went to the NBA Finals against Detroit, they had a 21-6 record in March and April. The Blazers-Warriors series --- Portland has won two of three from the Warriors this year and six of eight over the last two campaigns. The Blazers own an 82-59 advantage in the all-time series between the two teams and can capture their 16th season series in 26 years with a victory in Oakland on Friday. Portland won on its last visit to the Bay Area, thumping Golden State, 112-98 back in November. The Blazers have won on two of their last three trips south but the Warriors still have a 45- 25 homecourt edge in their matchups with Portland. When Golden State treks north, the story is different: The Blazers are 57-13 on their own court against the Warriors. This year versus Golden State --- A record long-range shooting performance by the Blazers in the first meeting this season fueled a 112- 98 win over the Warriors and their former coach Rick Adelman in Oakland. The Blazers blistered the nets from three-point land, converting a record 13 of 23 for the game, with 10 of 16 going in in the first half. In the second matchup in Portland in February, Golden State capitalized on a swarm of Blazers turnovers, including three in the game's final 46 seconds, for a 99-98 win in their first visit to the Rose Garden. Portland blew a five-point lead in the game's final 1:21, committing seven of its season-high 26 turnovers in the last two minutes. Arvydas Sabonis tied his career high with 26 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to pace the Blazers to a 94-89 homecourt win three weeks ago. Rod Strickland and Harvey Grant had key baskets down the stretch to ice the win after Latrell Sprewell had tied it at 87-87 with 2:05 remaining. In the three games, Portland has outscored the Warriors by six points a game, outrebounded them by five a game and shot 49 percent from the floor to 43 percent by Golden State. Sabonis, with a 20.3 points per game average, Clifford Robinson with a 20.0 average, and Strickland, who averaged 18.0 points and 11.0 assists led the Blazers. Slowed in Seattle --- Portland was outscored, 59-38, in the middle two panels enroute to a 96-90 setback at Seattle Wednesday, only its third loss in the last 20 games. The Blazers, playing without point guard Rod Strickland (strained groin muscle), shot just 37 percent for the game (31- 83), and were outrebounded, 45-37, for only the fourth time in the last 20 contests. Portland tied a team record by putting up 26 three pointers and made eight of them. Seattle, which upped its home record to 37-3, shot 47 percent (35-74) from the field. Clifford Robinson topped all scorers with 21 points and Arvydas Sabonis added 18. Hersey Hawkins paced the Sonics with 20 points. The victory gave Seattle the season series, three games to one. Sabonis hits 1000 --- Arvydas Sabonis became only the seventh Trail Blazers rookie and the first in 15 years to reach the 1,000-point mark. He has scored 49 points in his last three games to raise his season total for 72 games to 1,047. The last rookie to top the century mark was Kelvin Ransey who finished with 1,217 points in 1980-81. Sabonis also had 29 rebounds in his last three games raise his season total to 581. That's the fifth highest total ever by a Blazers' first-year player. His scoring average of 14.5 points a contest is currently the sixth best ever by a Portland rookie. Geoff Petrie is the team's all-time leader, averaging 24.8 points in 82 games in the club's first season. Add Sabonis --- The 7-foot-3 center from Lithuania has been a key cog in the Blazers' torrid five-week run of 17 victories in 20 games. Since March 8, he has started 19 of the 20 games (missing one because of a viral infection) and has averaged 17.9 points, second highest on the team, and a team-best 10.8 rebounds while playing an average of 26.3 minutes per contest. In the stretch, he has posted 10 double-doubles, had 12 or more rebounds nine times and scored in double figures 17 times. He was named NBA Player of the Week for his efforts in the week ending March 31 when the Blazers won four in a row, two of them on the road. Bucking it up --- Blazers Capt. Buck Williams, who recently became only the eighth player in league history to top the 16,000 point-12,000 rebound mark, has been another of the keys in the team's 17-2 run. In the 19 games, Buck has burned the nets at a .574 rate (74-129), up from the 14- year career field goal mark of .552 he came into the season with and a big improvement from .445 shot chart (105-236) he had in his first 60 games this season. In starting three games and coming off the bench in the other 14, Buck has averaged 9.5 points compared with his season averages of 7.1 points. Defense doing it ---The Blazers have limited 12 of their last 20 opponents to under 43 percent field goal shooting and have held eight of them under 40 percent. Collectively, the 20 foes have managed to make just .413 of their field goal attempts . . . In the same 20 games, the Portland offense has clicked at a .463 field goal rate, including eight games when they converted 50 percent or more of their shots . . . Portland has outscored its last 20 foes by an average of 9.7 points a game, held 16 of them under 100 points and eight under 90. More defense --- So far in the season, the Blazers have clamped down on opponent field goal shooting at a team-record pace. Through 80 games, Portland opponents have converted just .444 of their shots from the field, which is below the club's all-time defensive low for a season, .449 by the 1977-78 team . . . The .444 field goal mark by opponents is the sixth lowest in the NBA going into Friday's game . . . Portland opponents have been held to a 97.2 points per game average, two points a contest under the all-time opponent low of 99.2 last year. Portland's defense ranks 11th toughest in the league for points allowed. Among the leaders --- CLIFFORD ROBINSON'S 20.6 points per game average places him 16th among NBA scoring leaders and his 38.1 minutes per game is No. 19 in the league . . . ROD STRICKLAND is averaging 9.6 assists a game, fourth highest among NBA leaders, his 18.8 ppg scoring average ranks him 31st in the league, he's 26th in steals with a 1.45 average, and his 37.7 minutes per game average is 20th highest . . . ARVYDAS SABONIS is seventh among the NBA's top field goal shooters with a .545 mark (389-714) in 72 games, ranks 30th in rebounding (8.1 per game), and 33rd in blocked shots (1.08 a game) . . . CHRIS DUDLEY is 21st in the NBA in rebounding with a 8.9 average and 28th in blocked shots (1.23 per game). Trail Blazing --- Twenty of the Blazers' 37 setbacks have been by five points or less and 11 have been by three or under . . . Conversely, 32 of the Blazers 43 wins have been by 6 points or more, 21 have been by 10 points or higher, and six have been by more than 20 . . . The Blazers are 7-11 in games decided by three points or less and 11-20 when the margin is five points or under but 21-11 when the difference is 10 points or more . . . Portland is 38-9 when leading going into the fourth quarter and 5-28 when tied or behind . . . It is 32-11 when holding the lead at halftime and 9-24 when trailing . . . The Blazers are 28-17 when leading after one quarter and 14-20 when behind or tied . . . They are 28-9 when scoring more than 100 points and 30-13 when limiting opponents to under 100 points . . . Portland is 15-22 against teams with better than .500 records and 28-15 with teams at .500 or under . . . Portland is 19-4 when shooting 50 percent or better from the field and 26-7 when keeping opponents at 43 percent or under . . . In winning 43 games, the Blazers victory margin averages 11.2 points; in its 37 losses, the margin is 7.9 points a game . . . Portland is 10-12 against teams in the Pacific Division, 4-7 against them on the road and is 28-22 overall in Western Conference action. Pounding the boards --- Portland, one of the league's premier rebounding teams over the last eight seasons (never finishing lower than fifth), is at it again. The Blazers have outrebounded 20 of their last 25 opponents, have averaged 48.6 retrieves in their last 17 games, have grabbed 50 or more misses eight times in those 17 games and 24 times total this season . . . The Blazers lead the NBA in defensive rebounding percentage (.735), are third in total rebounding percentage (.533), and sixth in offensive rebounding (.332). For the season, Portland is outrebounding its opponents by 5.4 a game for the season and has a 9.7 per game advantage on the boards over the last 19 games . . . The Blazers make rebounding is a team effort; they are among the elite in the league in that category even though their leading rebounders, Chris Dudley and Arvydas Sabonis, rank just 21st and 28th among league's leaders with 8.9 and 8.1 per game averages respectively. Mixing and matching --- P.J. Carlesimo has employed 17 different starting lineups this season, using just 11players to make up those combinations. No Blazer has started every game this season and only Elmore Spencer on the current roster has yet to get at least one starting call. In winning 16 of the last 18 games, Carlesimo has called out seven different starting units involving nine of his 12 players. Blazers top 800,000 mark --- Portland recorded its 13th sellout of the season Monday when 21,401 fans were on hand for the win over San Antonio. That boosted the total in the first year in the new Rose Garden with one regular season game remaining to 828,936, an average of 20,723. That is 97 percent of capacity for the new building and the total number exceeds by 300,528 the previous Blazers record one-season home attendance for 41 regular season games equalled in each of the last three years in Memorial Coliseum. Regular season finale Sunday --- After Friday's matchup with the Warriors, the Blazers return home to meet the Los Angeles Lakers in the regular-season finale on Sunday (6 p.m., KEX Radio, BlazerVision). P.J. --- P.J. Carlesimo is finishing his second winning season as head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers. Last year, Carlesimo guided Portland to a 44-38 record, to become the first coach in 25 years and only the fourth in the history of the league to move directly from college to a head coaching job in the pros and post a winning record. The last coach to make the successful jump in one season was Cotton Fitzsimmons, who went from Kansas State to Phoenix to guide the Suns to a 48-34 in 1970- 71. Going into the Seattle game, P.J. has a two-season mark of 87-74 in Portland.
