PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS at WASHINGTON BULLETS GAME NO. 69---SATURDAY, MARCH 22, 1997 Record: Overall---40-28, Home---25-10, Road---15-18 GOING FOR 12 --- The young Trail Blazers, 40-28, will be out to extend their league-best winning streak to 12 in a row when they land in the USAir Arena Saturday for the second stop on their five-game, seven-day Eastern invasion. Portland, the youngest team in the NBA in terms of both age and experience, made it 11 straight Thursday when they won at Milwaukee, 97-78, and in the process equalled the franchise s second-longest winning streak ever. At 40-28, the Blazers are 12 games above .500, the farthest they ve been over the break-even point in P.J. Carlesimo s three-year coaching tenure and the most since March 9, 1994, when team was 16 wins over the mark. Portland is seven wins better than it was after 68 games last year when it finished with a 44-38 record. The Blazers, with the Western Conference s fifth best record, are 5 1/2 games back of Houston and 6 behind the Lakers as they head down the stretch toward their league-best 15th consecutive playoff appearance and their 20th in the last 21 seasons. Since the start of the current 11-game winning streak on Feb. 28 (a 115-105 victory over Utah) the Blazers have outscored their opponents by an average of 12.5 points a game (including margins of 10 or more points in eight of the 11), pounded out a 6.6 per game rebounding advantage and shot 51.1% from the field. STREAKING --- The Blazers 11-game win streak, the NBA's longest current run, equals the second longest in franchise history. Only the 1990-91 team that posted a club-record 63 wins has done better, opening the season with an 11-0 run then setting a club record of 16 in a row just before the playoffs. 16 straight --- March 20-April 19, 1991 11 straight --- Feb. 28, 1997-present 11 straight --- Nov. 2-Nov. 25, 1990 10 straight --- March 3-March 20, 1990 THE BLAZERS-BULLETS SERIES --- The Blazers have lost three in a row to Washington and now trail in their all-time series with the Bullets, 36-33. Portland needs a win at Landover to keep the Bullets for sweeping the season series for the second consecutive season. Washington stopped the Blazers in the Rose Garden back in December. Before the three straight losses, Portland had won four in a row in the series and 10 of the previous 11. On the Bullets floor, the Blazers are 11-23, including a 113-97 setback last season. Portland s last win in Landover came on Dec. 4, 1993, 118-105. Washington has won two in a row in Portland but the Blazers still own a 22-13 series advantage at home. EARLIER THIS SEASON --- Portland had a 31-29 lead after the first 12 minutes but then was outscored by Washington, 54-29, in the middle two panels and never recovered as the Bullets ran out of the Rose Garden with a 106-84 victory on Dec. 23. It was the Blazers third straight loss to Washington and the biggest homecourt setback ever at the hands of the Atlantic Division team. Arvydas Sabonis topped Portland scoring with 23 points. Juwan Howard led the Bullets with a season-high 27 points. Portland shot .410 from the field (34-83) while the Bullets shot at a .524 clip (43-82. The Blazers were outrebounded, 46-33. Sabonis eight boards was tops for Portland. Blazers forward Rasheed Wallace left the game midway through the second quarter with what was later diagnosed as a fractured left thumb. MAKING THE DIFFERENCE --- The current streak is a dramatic turnaround from the previous 14 outings when the Blazers won just four games. In the last 11 contests, all wins, the Blazers have averaged 104.9 ppg and outscored their opponents by 12.5 a game, have grabbed a 6.1 rebounds per game edge and shot 51.1% from the field and 45.0% from long range. In the previous 14 games, they averaged 96.4 ppg, were outscored by 3.6 points a contest, outrebounded 1.0 per game while shooting 44.4% from the field and 33% from three-point range. Portland has gone over the 100-point mark in seven of its 11 most recent victories while topping the century mark only five times when going 4-10. On the opposite side, opponents have bettered 100 points just three times in the last 11 games while going over that mark in 10 of the previous 14 contests. THE LAST TWO GAMES 11 IN A ROW --- The Blazers opened their five-game Eastern trip in good fashion, ringing up a 97-78 victory in Milwaukee Thursday for their league-best 11th consecutive win. That equals the second longest streak in the club s history. Clifford Robinson and Rasheed Wallace each scored 20 points to lead the Blazers, who were up by as many as 28 points late in the third period and ahead, 83-59, going into the final stanza. Portland had a 51-44 lead at halftime then blew the game open with a 28-9 explosion to start the third period. Guard Kenny Anderson, Portland's leading scorer, had a season-low four points but dished out 11 assists as the Blazers converted 47% of their shots from the floor (40-85) while limiting the Bucks to 37% shooting (29-79). The 78 points by Milwaukee was an all-time low against Portland. The Blazers controlled the glass, 51-43. Gary Trent grabbed 11 rebounds for game-high honors. The Bucks Vin Baker topped all scorers with 26 points. HOLDING OFF THE KINGS --- Portland jumped to a 15-0 lead in the game s first 4 minutes then had to hold off Sacramento down the stretch for a hard-earned 92-87 victory in the Rose Garden Tuesday. The five-point margin was the biggest in the last five games between the two teams. The victory extended Portland's win streak to a league-best 10 in a row, was its season-best eighth straight at home and earned a split in the season series with the Kings. Kenny Anderson paced the Blazers with 22 points, all in the second half, and dished out a game-high eight assists. Rasheed Wallace added 15 points and Arvydas Sabonis had 13, a game-high nine rebounds. The Kings Mitch Richmond led all scorers with 29 points, 22 of them in the second half. The Blazers shot 50.8% from the floor (32-63), the seventh time in 10 games they topped the 50% mark. The 63 field goal attempts tied a Blazer record low for a game. Sacramento made 46.3% of their attempts (37-80), but were held to just eight points in the first quarter, an all-time Blazers opponent low. BLAZING --- The Trail Blazers are firing at a 51.1% clip from the field in their current 11-game win streak, and have topped the 50% mark in seven of the victories. In four of the games they converted at a better than 54% rate, including a season-best 57.9% (44-76) vs. Utah on Feb. 28; 55.6% (45-81) vs. Philadelphia on Mar. 2; 55.0% (44-80) vs. New Jersey on Mar. 4; and 54.2% (39-72) last Sunday at the Clippers . . .The Blazers are now 18-3 in games when they shoot 50% or better . . . The 6-10 Wallace, who averaged 10.1 points and 4.6 rebounds as a rookie with Washington last season, has blossomed in his starting power forward role for the Blazers. Through Thursday's win over the Bucks, Rasheed is the team's fourth leading scorer, averaging 15.2 points and 6.8 rebounds and is shooting 56.7% from the field in 48 games, the third best mark in the NBA. That is up from 48.7% in 65 games with the Bullets last season, not among the top 75 percentage shooters in the league. He s bettered his career high points scored in a game seven times this season, including an all-time best 38 points at Scaramento Dec. 21. CLIFFORD MOVES UP THE LADDER --- Clifford Robinson played in his 628th NBA game---all in a Blazers uniform---Sunday at Los Angeles, moving him into fourth place ahead Jim Paxson on Portland's all-time list. Robinson also connected on nine treys in his last three outings to up his career total to 473, lifting him to second place ahead of Clyde Drexler among all-time Blazers long range shooters. Clifford, who has missed only 12 games in his seven-plus NBA seasons, now ranks in the club s top six in 14 categories. He recently became the team's third leading scorer (now with 10,219 points) behind Clyde Drexler and Terry Porter and is second in blocked shots (720) behind Mychal Thompson s 768. DEALING TREYS --- In the current 11-game win streak, Portland is hitting at a 45.0% clip from long range (86-191) with Kenny Anderson making 24 of 55, Isaiah Rider 15 of 29 and Clifford Robinson 28 of 57 . . . March 5th s record assault against the Suns from long range---16 three-pointers in 24 attempts---surpassed the Blazers all-time one-game mark of 13 set at Golden State on Nov. 29, 1995. Portland sizzled in the second half against the Suns, making 11 of 14 from beyond the arc, also a team record for one half. BALANCED ACT --- Portland is eighth in the league in scoring and third in rebounding, yet no Trail Blazer shows up in the top 25 in either category . . . However, six Blazers, led by Kenny Anderson s 18.0 ppg, are averaging in double figures and all six have led the team in scoring at least four times . . . The Blazers balance on the glass is even more pronounced: Arvydas Sabonis (7.9 rpg), Chris Dudley (7.2 rpg) and Rasheed Wallace (6.8) are Portland's leaders but none of the three rank among the NBA's top 30 boardsmen . . . One reason for Portland's continued position as one of the league's rebounding elite is balance. No fewer than 10 different Blazers have grabbed game honors this season. FOR THE 22ND SEASON --- Portland recorded its 37th victory of the season Friday against Cleveland, extending to 22 consecutive seasons its streak with 37 or more wins. The best any team in the NBA can come to that consistency in the same span is Seattle with at least 31 wins in each of the 22 seasons. THE LEGACY OF THE 77 TEAM --- On April 3 and 4, the Blazers will bring back the 1976-77 team for events celebrating the 20th anniversary of the city s first ever major sports title---the NBA Championship. Winning the title and launching Blazermania is reason enough for the celebration, but of equal importance is the legacy that team gave the franchise. Prior to the 1976-77 season, the Blazers had not had a winning season nor had they been in the playoffs. Since the start of the 1976-77 season and through Thursday's victory over the Bucks, Portland has won 58.5% of its games, has had only two losing seasons and is heading for a league-best 15th straight playoff appearance and the 20th in the last 21 seasons. The Blazers have been in the conference finals four times and the NBA's biggest show three times and are just one win shy of 1,000 in the 20-plus seasons. Only the Celtics and Lakers have gone past 1,000 wins in the same time span. ANDERSON S ASSISTS COUNTING UP --- Kenny Anderson contributed 11 assists to Thursday's victory and now has dished out 482 for the season (7.1 per game, 10th best in the league). That means $9,420 so far for the Kids Making Miracles $1 million drive to fund a state-of-the-art health care facility at Portland's Doernbecher Children s Hospital. Anderson, honorary chairman of Kids Making Miracles, has pledged $20 for every assist he makes during the season. As part of the NBA's youth initiative TeamUp, the Trail Blazers are committed to help build public awareness of Kids Making Miracles, a volunteer organization of Oregon and SW Washington grade and high school students.
