1. What is meuf ?
-----------------

This is the third general release of a simple x11 "mail" utility. It monitors
a mail file. In the opened window are displayed icons representing message
senders or their organization if present in /usr/local/faces, senders name
and message subject.
This window is automatically updated each time spoolfile is modified so user
can immediately see incoming mails.
When users clicks on a face (user or organization), a new window is opened.
It contains the incoming message and allows user to reply, edit and reply,
save, forward, delete, undelete and print message. Each time you edit a
message, this one is displayed in a new independant window.
Deleted messages icons are displayed in main window in reverse mode. Deleted
messages are suppressed from spoolfile when clicking the button
"Update Spooler".

Current version is 1.4.

Options for meuf are:

-p seconds	: set update period
-f spoolfile	: set alternate spoolfile
-u username	: use an other user's mail spool file
-r : exchange fg and bg for faces
	-silent : never beep
	-h : little help
-w script	: use script output as spool file

By default, mail file used is /var/spool/mail/$USER and window is updated
every five seconds.

This release contains graphical interface for X11 using Xt and Xaw R>4.

A small tool, xbmtoface, converting XBM bitmaps into Faces is also provided.
Please see its manual page for further details.

2. Getting started.
-------------------

Install:
install_meuf : compile meuf distribution and build doc.
make install : install the meuf binary in BINDIR
make install_man	: install the meuf manual page in MANDIR

Using install_meuf, the default directories where to look for local faces must
be entered as in the following example:

if the default domains are grif.fr
	                       and grif.grif.fr

	then the directories are fr/grif
	                       and fr/grif/grif

3. Using meuf.
--------------

See Meuf(1) manual page for usage, details and examples.

About face and bitmap formats, about /usr/local/faces structure, about
compface routines and about whatever is not explained in this file, please see
README file in faces-1.6.0 package. See also xbmtoface(1) manual page.

5. Last second news...
-----------------------

An article about Meuf should be published in TribUnix No 47 (published by
AFUU: French Unix User Group)...
