Chapter 1
This chapter lists the hardware and software that you are required to have on any system you certify with the Hardware Certification Test Suite (HCTS).
Caution - During HCTS installation, the installation script sets
"+ +" in the file /.rhosts. This setting allows any user
from any remote host to access your system. HCTS should only be installed
on a non-production system on a private network.
For system, network, and serial I/O certification, you must install HCTS on two machines. Both machines must be running the same version of the Solaris OS and the same version of HCTS. The two systems should be isolated as much as possible from any other systems on the private network.
system under test – This is the system you want to certify, or the system that has the device you want to certify.
test manager system – This is the system where you launch HCTS.
This section lists the hardware and software requirements all systems must meet to run HCTS.
To use HCTS, your system must meet the following hardware requirements:
Network. Your system should be a non-production system on a private network. Your system should be isolated as much as possible from any other systems on the private network.
Processor. The system under test must have at least a 450 MHz processor.
Floating point. The system under test must have hardware floating point support.
RAM. The system under test must have at least 512 Mbytes of RAM for 64-bit systems. All other systems must have at least 256 Mbytes of RAM.
Swap. The system under test must have at least 1024 Mbytes of /swap for 64-bit systems. All other systems must have at least 512 Mbytes of /swap.
Hardware. For controller certification, the system under test must have the controller you want to certify.
System name. The name of any system involved in HCTS testing must take the following form:
A host name is a string of one to 30 characters. The first character must be an alphabetic (A-Z or a-z) character. The remaining characters can be alphabetic, numeric (0-9), hyphen (-), period (.), or underscore (_). No distinction is made between upper case and lower case alphabetic characters. The last character must be an alphabetic (A-Z or a-z) or numeric (0-9) character. A host name cannot contain any whitespace characters.
To use HCTS, your system must meet the following software requirements:
Operating system.
Note - If you are using a separate test manager system, the operating system on the test manager system must be the same as the operating system on the system under test.
If you are certifying a system, motherboard, or network, do not install the operating system yet. Installating the Solaris OS is one of the tests you must perform for a system, motherboard, or network certification. For all other certifications, the system under test must have one of the following two operating systems installed:
Solaris 10 Operating System (or update release). To install the operating system, see Solaris 10 Installation Guide: Basic Installations.
Solaris 9 Operating System (or update release). To install the operating system, see Solaris 9 Installation Guide.
Note - You must perform at least a Developer group Solaris OS installation. With a Developer group installation, you get Apache and other tools that are required for HCTS testing. See the Solaris 10 Package List or the Solaris 9 Package List for a list of what you get with different types of installations. See the installation guide for information on how to perform a Developer group Solaris OS installation. You must select Custom Install and then select Developer group or above.
Operating system patches. Make sure all current patches are installed. For the Solaris 9 OS, make sure patch 117172-12 is installed.
Slices. Make sure the system under test has slices s0, s1, and s2.
Browser. Any system involved in HCTS testing must have one of the following internet browsers:
For use with the Solaris 10 OS:
Mozilla version 1.4 or higher
Netscape version 7 or higher
For use with the Solaris 9 OS:
Netscape 4.7 or higher
In addition to the system requirements listed in the previous section, your system must meet minimum requirements for your specific testing. The following list shows the certifications performed by HCTS and provides a link to the associated test plan for that certification. Each test plan provides the specific system requirements for each certification.
Systems Certification
Motherboard Certification
Network Controller Certification
Serial I/O Controller Certification
Storage Controller Certification
In addition to providing the system requirements, each test plan provides detailed instructions for performing the manual tests for that type of certification. You must successfully complete all manual tests before you run HCTS.
