Certifying Storage Controllers

The HCTS Storage Controller certification enables you to test the following technologies:

The testing procedure is the same for certifying Fibre Channel, RAID, SATA, and SCSI controllers. See How to Certify Fibre Channel, RAID, SATA, and SCSI Controllers for more information. The certification process for USB Hard Drives is slightly different. See How to Certify a USB Hard Drive for information.

For specific information about each step and values that can be entered, see the HCTS online help.

Certifying Fibre Channel, RAID, SATA, and SCSI Controllers

  1. Make sure your system meets the general hardware and software requirements for all certifications stated in the Hardware Certification Test Suite Installation Guide and the specific requirements for Fibre Channel, RAID, SATA, and SCSI controller certifications stated in the Storage Controller Certification Level 1 Test Plan and the Storage Controller Certification Level 2 Test Plan.

  2. Successfully complete all manual tests required for the hardware and certification level you are testing:

  3. Review the tests that will be performed during this automated portion of HCTS testing:

  4. Start HCTS as described in Starting the HCTS Application.

  5. On the Start Page, click the Controller Certification button.

The Start Page is shown in Figure 2-1.

  6. On the Controller Certification screen, select either Level 1 or Level 2 from the pull-down menu.

  7. In the Storage section of the certification screen, select the storage technology (Fibre Channel, RAID, SATA, or SCSI) of the hardware that you want to certify.

  8. Click the Continue button at the bottom of the screen.

  9. On the Hard Disk Selection screen, select the disks you want to test by clicking the checkbox to the left of the name of the disk in the table.

Caution Caution - The selected disks are reformatted and all data on all partitions is lost on the selected disks, except for the following disks: Any disk that has a / (root directory), /opt, /var, /usr, or /export/home mount point is preserved. If you select such a disk, this HCTS testing will not damage any data on that disk.

Screen with disks selected
  10. Click the Continue button at the bottom of the screen.

  11. The Hard Disk Confirmation screen gives you one more opportunity to confirm that the listed disks are the disks you want to test. If you click the Cancel button, you return to the Hard Disk Selection screen. If you click the Continue button, HCTS testing proceeds on the listed disks. One or more of the disks that will be tested may also be reformatted. The disks that will be reformatted are listed separately.

Caution Caution - If a disk will be reformatted, then all data on all partitions of that disk will be lost. Any disk that has a / (root directory), /opt, /var, /usr, or /export/home mount point will not be reformatted, and data will not be lost on such a disk.

  12. Click the Continue button at the bottom of the screen.

If at least one of the disks listed in the Hard Disk Confirmation screen does not have any /, /opt, /var, /usr, or /export/home mount point, then the Please Stand By screen is displayed. If all disks listed in the Hard Disk Confirmation screen have a /, /opt, /var, /usr, or /export/home mount point, then the select action screen is displayed

  13. The Please Stand By screen displays while you wait for disks to be reformatted. When reformatting is complete, the select action screen displays.

  14. On the select action screen, click the Certify Controller button.

The Certify Controller button enables you to certify your controller using the standard set of automated tests for the predetermined amount of time.

If you are performing a Level 2 SCSI certification and you do not have a CD in the CD drive, you are prompted to insert one. After you have inserted a CD, click the Controller Certification button on the error screen and restart this certification. You do not see the Hard Disk Selection Screen, Hard Disk Confirmation screen, or Please Stand By screen this time since the partitions have already been made.

  15. Once the tests start, the Review Test Status Screen displays. See Reviewing Test Status for more information about this screen.

Note - At any time during the test, you can click the Stop Tests button to terminate the certification process. See the information on Stop Tests in Usage Notes.
