JPEG

JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) is a raster file format commonly used on the World Wide Web. It uses "lossy compression", meaning that the image data can be sacrificed in order to save disk space. Most graphics applications allow you to control the amount of loss when creating JPEGs. The less data that is lost, the better the image appears and the larger the file becomes.

JPEG is used most successfully with images with gradual color transition, such as photographs. High-contrast images do better as TIFFs. Line drawings do better as CALS files.
