Active Directory Service (ADS)
Microsoft's directory service. A remote ADS server is used for authenticating users in addition to the local files.
BIOS
BIOS is a boot loader for the platform operating system that performs early initialization of the platform hardware, loads the operating system kernel, and enables low-level, pre-device driver device access. BIOS is used to configure the system, update its own and other flash memory regions, and to boot the platform operating system.
data panel
The data panel is the main display area that appears on the right side of the SM Console. Content in this panel varies according to the menu options you select from the menu bar on the left.
device
Any machine or component that attaches to a computer; for example, disk drives, printers, mice, and modems, which are external devices, or sensors and fans, which are internal devices.
device driver
Most devices require a program called a device driver that converts general commands from an application into specific commands that the device understands.
directory services
The method of storing and accessing login and password information for access to the Service Processor. See also ADS and NIS.
help panel
Help text displays in the bottom panel of the SM Console, called the help panel, and provides information and system messages whenever you move your mouse over a visual element in the Console.
IP address
A standard addressing and message format for communications following the Internet Protocol (IP). An IP address has two parts: the identifier of a particular network on the Internet and an identifier of the particular device within that network.
menu bar
A navigation tree providing a simple hierarchical menuing system into all of the application functions. Selecting an option from the menu bar displays a new screen in the data panel.
Network Information Service (NIS)
A UNIX originated solution to directory service. A remote NIS server is used for authenticating users in addition to the local files.
Platform
The system containing a combination of AMD processors, memory, and I/O (excluding the Service Processor).
Service Processor (SP)
An embedded processor responsible for managing configuration and event response.
SMTP
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, a protocol for sending e-mail messages between servers.
SM Console
The Systems Management Console; the interface to the Service Processor.
SNMP
Standard Network Management Protocol; a standard mechanism for tracking configuration and status of a system. Supported both on the Service Processor and platform, SNMP allows for connection to third-party management frameworks.
ssh
Secure Shell is a program to log in to another computer over a network, to execute commands in a remote machine, and to move files from one machine to another.
SSL
Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is a common protocol for managing the security of message transmission on the internet.
Systems Management
The general area of Information Technology (IT) that concerns configuring and managing computer resources, especially network resources.
thresholds
A point at which some action occurs; typically notification of a change in system or component status.
toolbar
A graphical user interface element consisting of buttons that provide high-level system status information, quick links to the most common functions in the SM Console, and access to online help.
