If passwd compat mode is specified in /etc/nsswitch.conf, and the the following is entered in /etc/passwd: +somebody::0:0::: or +@somebody::0:0::: the directory and shell fields of a user will be filled by the gecos field. Users will not get their home directory when they log in, or they will get a different shell.
